- The death of King Henry VIII throws his kingdom into chaos because of succession disputes. His weak son Edward VI is on his deathbed. Anxious to keep England true to the Reformation, a scheming minister John Dudley marries off his son Guildford to Lady Jane Grey, whom he places on the throne after Edward dies.
- Richard Gaylord, Jr. is a modern Lothario who has so many sweethearts that his father does not know what to do with him. Tired of paying to get his son out of one romantic entanglement after another, the elder Gaylord sends his son to the Basque region of France, believing that the women there will accept attentions only from their own people. Almost immediately, a local girl, Yvonne Hurja becomes infatuated with Richard, whom she sees as being able to help her break free from the unwanted attention of local guardsman Julio. A rivalry grows between Richard and Julio.
- In 1812, during the French period, large parts of Germany are occupied by the troops of Napoleon. Several paramilitary Freikorps units battle the French forces, among them the Black Brunswickers led by the 'Black Duke' Frederick William of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. After the War of the Fifth Coalition, the Black Hussars are pursued by Napoleon throughout the country, but frequently take refuge with the noble-minded German people.

- Sherlock Holmes receives a letter from a Nathan Garrideb of 136 Little Ryder Street, asking for help in a most peculiar quest. He is looking for another man with his unusual surname, for it will mean a $5 million inheritance for him. He has been approached by another man, John Garrideb of Kansas, who says that he needs to find others with the same last name.
- During the British Raj, Captain Carruthers works under cover to track smuggled shipments of arms on the restless Northwest Frontier of India. He fears a full-scale rebellion is brewing. To forestall this, the British governor signs a treaty with the friendly, peace-loving ruler of Tokot, a key kingdom in the region, which is described as four days' march northward from Peshawar. Meanwhile, the king's son, Prince Azim, befriends Carruthers and a British drummer boy, Bill Holder, who teaches him how to play the instrument.
- Deadwood Dick, a masked and mysterious hero, is in reality Dick Stanley, editor of the Dakota Pioneer Press and a leading member of Statehood For Dakota. He is on the trail of a masked villain known as the Skull, who leads a violent, renegade band infamous for its violence against the Deadwood residents' wishes for a statehood status.
- Buck Sherman and Jake Jackson, a couple of evil carpetbaggers, illegally enter a Navajo reservation to prospect for gold and end up killing Aranho, the Navajos chief. Black Arrow, presumed Aranho's son, refuses to kill the Indian agent, Tom Whitney, in revenge, as demanded by Navajo law. Then, he is driven off the reservation for his reluctance to kill Whitney and decides to join forces with Pancho, Mary Brent and the agent to go in search of the men who killed the chief.
- In 1924, veteran Bolshevik Petrov, a resident of Tsaritsyn, carries a letter to Vladimir Lenin, to inform him of the Kulak brigands that roam the land, spreading death and misery. The Kulaks murder him. His widow, Varvara, continues his quest, joining a group that travels to Moscow. When they arrive, they discover that Lenin is dead. In the Kremlin, Vyacheslav Molotov tells Anastas Mikoyan that now, Grigory Zinoviev, Lev Kamenev and Nikolai Bukharin will attempt to subvert the party by attacking Stalin, Lenin's devout disciple. Stalin, mourning his teacher's passing away, carries a eulogy in the funeral, calling for all attendants and all the people of the Soviet Union to vow to maintain his legacy. The people swear. Varvara sees Stalin and hands him over the blood-stained letter entitled "To Lenin". Varvara's son, Sergei, becomes an inventor, developing the first Soviet tractor with Stalin's encouragement. Her other son, Alexander, becomes manager of the Stalingrad Tractor Factory. Stalin leads the people of the USSR in implementing the Five-Year Plans and in industrializing their country, in spite of Bukharin's resistance. American saboteurs burn the Tractor Factory, killing Varvara's daughter, Olga. As the Germans threaten world war, Sergei travels to Paris, to warn of the impending danger. The French and the British reject Soviet warnings. As the Second World War begins, the two sons volunteer for the front. At the end of the war, Varvara and Stalin meet again in the Kremlin. Stalin kisses her hand, in recognition of the Soviet mothers' contribution to victory, telling her that soon, all that Lenin has foreseen would be fulfilled.
- The hapless king of a small European nation must put up with a domineering queen, a daughter who wants to elope with her boyfriend, a peasant revolt and a scheming son who wants to be king himself and is plotting to take advantage of the situation.

- An ambitious D.A. convicts a possibly innocent man of murder. After six years, the D.A. is appointed prison warden while the convict's mental state has deteriorated. Feeling sympathy for the prisoner, the warden makes the convict his daughter's chauffeur. The two become romantically involved.

Soon after the Gages and their daughters move in, the Jonathan Rockwoods arrive to take advantage of their relative's will. Inevitable difficulties arise when two families live under one roof. A neighbor is expecting a child and has no one to attend to her needs. Mathilda Rockwood and Barbara Gage go to help until a nurse arrives. This incident leads the two families to iron out their problems.
- Studying art in Paris, Cherry Martin meets and marries a man, Evan Davies, an artist 15 years her senior. Matters become complicated when the couple goes to live with Cherry's mother in England, and Evan and her parent fall in love with one another.
- While on a cruise, an author becomes acquainted with a lovely young woman. Although nothing happens between them, the writer pens a story about their nonexistent romantic escapade. Upon reading the story, the woman believes that the author is married to an invalid wife and wishes to be rescued from his horrible life. She's more than happy to do that for him.
- Milt Shanks is an Illinois man who brings disgrace to his wife and son by joining the Copperheads. This is a group of residents in Northern states who are sympathetic to the South and refuse to go to war against them. His real reasons are revealed later.
- The Crochets, a Cajun family who lives in the Louisiana bayou, are proud of the steps that they have salvaged from the river for their two-room shack which houses a family of eight. "The Commodore" is a lazy man who presumably earns his living as a ditch digger. Mrs. Crochet raises lilies in the swamp, hoping she will someday be able to sell them. They learn of the possibility of getting a larger home, one that will match their steps, if they can raise $60. They are sure of getting the money, but at the last minute their hopes are dashed when their sources prove unreliable. Then a florist from New Orleans appears and buys all of Mrs. Crochet's lilies, 7,000 at 2 cents each, saving the day.
- Mr. Broxopp has become fabulously wealthy making Broxopp Beans for Babies, the most popular brand in England. Despite his riches, he is shunned by the "better people" of society. When his son becomes engaged to a wealthy, young society woman, the boy wants to change his name to something more dignified. Mr. Broxopp is pushed too far when he's asked to change his name to Sir Chillingham.
- Three men are dispatched to west Africa on a search for diamonds. After finding a rich mine, they learn that the man who hired them plans on cheating them out of their share. To preserve their stake on the diamonds, the three draw to determine who will kill their boss.
- A stockbroker with integrity struggles on his modest wages rather than cheat investors with the worthless oil stock sold by his company. His neighbor with few standards, however, soon becomes rich. Later in life, the stockbroker's son finds himself at an ethical crossroads and decides to take the high road as his father did.

Funny thing about the woman in the painting: she bears a striking resemblance to the judge's daughter.

- A scathing denunciation of gambling and feudal aristocrats of the 19th Century, this story relates how Philip, a young medical student, bargains away his career for the unsure success of high gambling stakes. His caution turns to uncontrollable greed when he learns that money can buy women and quick fame. His destiny is bound to Theresa's, a beautiful young woman who has been mortgaged in marriage for her stepfather's debt, and to her wealthy grandmother's, who chooses to gamble away her fortune so there will be no inheritors.
- In England in the 1890s, Colonel Chart, a widower with four children, falls in love with a charming, wealthy American widow, Mrs. Churchley, but his 27-year-old spinster daughter Adela contrives to ruin the relationship. She also turns two of the other three children against their intended stepmother and spoils the widow's plans to help Adela's brother Godfrey out of an unpleasant situation.

Her innocently disingenuous nosiness helps to bring about a marriage between two cripples, a therapeutic romance for a depressed war widow, a happy ending in a sordid triangle affair. Even her death from heart trouble helps a friend, radical and fanatic, somehow learns a lesson in elementary humanity.
