After five months of incessant and senseless shelling, a group of children living in Aleppo start painting the walls of their city. It is an act of protest as well as resistance: a small act that dares to dream of bringing back life in a place that has been humiliated by bombs and bullets, while international powers were watching without doing anything to save lives.
    • In the Name of Scheherazade or the First Beergarden in Tehran (2019)

      4. In the Name of Scheherazade or the First Beergarden in Tehran

      20191h 15m
      7.1 (33)
Forget everything you think you know about storytelling. And get ready for a very surreal trip. Narges Kalhor plunges us in a funny and deconstructed joyful apocalypse of a web of stories while following four characters who moved to Germany in order to escape the dire and dangerous political situation of their countries. A Syrian gay teenager fears that his visa might be refused and that he might have to return home. An Iranian girl dreams of a Beergarden in the heart of Tehran. Another one struggles with her film project and her teacher that offers useless advice about the ways of making her work more understandable. And, while Scheherazade spins her stories night after night, the world turns gently upside down. A film that offers new meanings on getting lost in translation, while proposing also new perspectives on communication and multiculturalism. A hymn to the sheer force and freedom of creativity. A film that weaves together many layers of reality, juggling with fiction, mocking documentary and its rules.
    • Another Year (2016)

      5. Another Year

      20163h 1mNot Rated
      7.0 (47)
Thirteen dinners of a Chinese migrant worker's family over the course of fourteen months. The film portrays a series of random occurrences. Joys, frustrations and the struggle for survival. The meals unfold in real-time through thirteen static, long takes. Each take captures with vivid detail the reality of the relationships between the different family members. As the seasons unfold, so does time and the echoes for better working conditions penetrate the frame. Issues such as the one-child policy and the possibilities for better wages weigh heavily on the minds of the three-generation family. Thus, the room where the family gathers night after night becomes an observational microcosm of the transformations that the Chinese working class faces on a daily basis. By examining the lives of migrant workers, who left their rural home-towns to look for a better life in cities, the film creates a powerful and moving meditation on China's economic boom and massive urbanization. Another Year is an extremely acute depiction of the complexities of the Chinese economy and society.
    • The Moon the Sun and the three Musketeers (2017)

      6. The Moon the Sun and the three Musketeers

      2017Short
A small town on the border between Portugal and Spain. A place beyond space and time. Not much happens during the day. But at night old ghosts roam once again the ancient streets of the village.
