- Our economic system has made itself invisible and eludes understanding. In recent years, we have often had little more than a diffuse and unsatisfactory feeling that something is going wrong. But what? Beyond the distanced phrases of media coverage, which ultimately make it impossible to grasp the monstrous logic behind the basic structures of our everyday lives, OECONOMIA sets out with great perspicacity and lucid stringency to break things down to the simple rules, to illuminate the capitalism of the present. A zero-sum game is discernible, a game that places us and our entire world in the logic of an endlessly perpetual increase in capital - no matter how great the cost.
- Fauziah is the daughter of a poor itinerant food vendor whose brother has forsaken them for a life of luxury. On a particularly stormy night, Fauziah's already frail father is hit by a car during his return home. The driver Yazid is a young kind man who takes to caring after Fauziah and eventually marries her. In Darah Muda, Fauziah is the epitome of a virtuous woman during its time - extremely reserved, pious, a faithful wife and a nurturing mother.
- In December 1983, David Bowie's massive 'Serious Moonlight ' tour arrived in Asia for three shows in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore, virtually uncharted territory for major rock acts at the time. The resulting triptych depicts Bowie's strange encounters with other cultures in a hybrid documentary-fiction-diary film. In Singapore, he grapples with the city's contradictions, befriending Chinese opera performers, drifting through alienating shopping malls, culminating in the troubled, almost cancelled concert in the National Stadium.
- This romantic comedy, Myanmar's earliest surviving colour film, revolves around two friends who move to Yangon to look for work. They meet a beautiful young woman named Kyu Kyu, who lives with her aunt since her parents passed away. Though she is rich and owns her own company, Kyu Kyu is humble and attracts the attention of several suitors, including a police officer, an air force captain, and a writer. Starring many of the major Burmese actors of the time, the film is a precious document of the prolific and vibrant movie industry in Myanmar then.
- Adapted from an original novel titled 'Fatimah' by Chua Boon Hean, 'Sri Menanti'is a poignant portrayal of an intercultural romance inhibited by racial prejudice and segregation, religious conservatism, and repressive social mores. The film stars Malay actress Zaiton and Hong Kong actor Paul Chang as the star-crossed lovers who seek in the Other not only connection and acceptance but also escape and freedom. Released in both Malay and Mandarin-dubbed versions, the film was unprecedented in the Singapore film industry for casting both local Malay and Hong Kong Chinese film stars.
