- A young Austrian survives the crash of a commercial airliner. Six years later, she's a clerk, a mother, and happy. Then she dies in a car accident. Over the next year, her daughter goes through various medical blood tests, her husband is having an affair with her best friend, her sister trades sex for shelter, her brother is tiptoeing around a friendship with an emotionally-locked clerk whose mother is lonely, and an unpopular high-school student has bad skin. The daughter has her eye on a certain boy--the very one who was driving the car in the fatal crash. In happenstance are there patterns? In life is there meaning?
- A cold day in January 2006. The police make a horrible discovery in the Swedish town of Hudiksvall: In one night, 18 people have been brutally murdered in the small town. The police suspect a madman is behind the bestial act. But when judge Birgitta Roslin hears the news, she instantly knows that her grandparents August and Britta Andrén are among the victims. And even more: Almost everybody killed somehow relates to her. She realizes that the police are following a wrong track and starts to investigate on her own. Her search leads Brigitta to China where she finds out about the cruel scheming of the leading elite.

- What happens next determines what happened before. That is why the small town journalist, Jonathan D., recognizes connections where others see only random events. With the narrative about an unresolved bank robbery, he writes his most successful title story, which, how could it be different, nobody understands.
