He calls a doctor, who pronounces her injuries fatal. The old lady recognizes Stephen, of whom she is very fond, and who closely resembles his father. She expresses a hope that he and Doris will be wedded to each other, and again repeats the romance of her life. As she does so, visions of the happy retrospect appear before her and she passes away in thoughts of that past happiness, and a full realization of the joys that await her in the life beyond. Grieving at the loss of their good friend, Doris and Stephen, kneeling at her bedside, touch hands, and looking into each other's eyes, they ask each other if they will fulfill Aunt Patience's hope. The mutual fervor with which they silently embrace each other is their answer.

Rupert Hazard, a struggling inventor, who has been excluded from Villon's office shortly previous, pushes his way into the inner office and scathingly denounces Villon, whom, he claims, stole his invention worth a fortune. At the dance the following evening. Irene, flushed with dancing and in all her resplendent glory and beauty, is seated with Arthur. He proposes, but her chill manner, cleverly affected, freezes the blood in his veins. Later in the evening she gives Villon the same negative answer. Villon, determined to win her, tells her that one word from him and she will he plunged into poverty. His words are heard by Arthur, who happens in conveniently. When Villon leaves, Arthur tells Irene that he heard all, and she gives way to weeping. Arthur leaves, the old clock in the hallway showing the hour to be 12:05. Irene is startled the next morning to read an account of the murder of Villon in his apartment. Colby is arrested for the crime, having been found with a revolver near the prostrate form of Villon. When the jury seems satisfied conclusively that Arthur murdered Villon, Irene is called to the stand. It has been learned from Villon's valet that the watch in the latter's pocket, shattered by a bullet and stopped at exactly midnight, had been in good running order. Very dramatically, Irene tells of her visit to Villon's office the day after the murder, where she learns that Villon has an enemy, Hazard, the inventor. Irene and her lawyer go to Hazard's place at 12 o'clock midnight a day later at Hazard's request. The discouraged inventor tells them how he broke into Villon's apartment and shot the lawyer, later engaging in a scuffle with Colby, who entered a few minutes later. When he completes his story, Hazard is blown to death by a device he had set to go off at midnight. Irene then tells the jury that Colby was with her in her home at the time the watch was shattered in Villon's pocket. Colby is acquitted, after which Irene takes a different perspective of things and Colby's anxiety is brought to an end.

Then Legar, set free, swears vengeance and begins his villainy by opening the sluice-gates that keep the sea from inundating the island. The waters rush in and the entire island is flooded and its houses swept away in the swirling waters. Legar kidnaps Golden's daughter, Margery, whom, in the next scene, twenty years later, we see grown to beautiful maidenhood, in his ominous power. Hate still lives in Legar's heart, and he sends Margery to a denizen of the underworld in whose house she is to be detained. But here steps in a mysterious gallant known as "The Laughing Mask," who saves her, for the nonce, from her fate.

When Charlie is rejected after attempting to imitate the slicker, the result is ambiguous--either tragic or a happy ending. Critics have long argued as to whether the final scene is real or a dream.

The chauffeur and the judge dive for the money. Holden gets it and pockets it, after which he discharges Jim. Jim is elected town marshal. He elopes with Jane. Judge Holden pursues the pair. Jim allows him to catch up and then arrests him for speeding. He places handcuffs on the Judge and has him arraigned in his own court. A substitute judge fines Holden. The humor of the situation appeals to Judge Holden. As Jim and .lane are leaving the court, he calls them back. Surprised, the two return. Turning to the substitute judge, Holden laughingly orders him to perform the marriage ceremony.

With the ruin of his country imminent, the boy ruler hastily sails for America to negotiate the loan, hoping at the same time to meet the girl of his dreams. The money is readily advanced by William W. Blithers, a self-made millionaire anxious to have his daughter marry into royalty. The daughter, however, avoids the Prince and he does not see her. He rescues a girl from drowning and falls in love with her. He believes her to be Blithers' daughter, but she does not reveal her identity. Simultaneous with the Prince's departure for home comes a note to Blithers from his daughter that she has sailed for Europe to escape the Prince. Blithers is elated. He is certain they will meet on shipboard. The Prince does meet the girl he loves. In Paris he makes a tryst with her and they are arrested for speeding. Before any sentence can be passed upon her, however, a diplomatic document reaches the court and they are freed. The Prince believes the power of Blithers to be world-wide. The night of his return to Graustark with the welcome news of the loan, the Prince of Dawsbergen is a guest at the palace. A mysterious note calls the younger man to the terrace. There he meets the girl. He tells her that even though she is Blithers' daughter, he wants to marry her. Taking her into the palace he announces her to the councilors as his future bride. He cannot account for their approving smile. "There is your father," he tells the girl as Blithers, who followed them across the ocean, enters the room. She laughs. "No, my father is over there," she exclaims, pointing to the Prince of Dawsbergen. The energetic Blithers explodes when he learns the news. He recovers himself, however, and says: "Congratulations. Prince. I can be a good loser."

Balduin rebuffs him, satirically asking his weird companion to procure him "the luckiest ticket in a lottery or a doweried wife." The old man goes off chuckling and thence onward persistently shadows Balduin, exerting a sinister influence over him, while Balduin is still disconsolate under the frowns of fortune. The Countess Margit Schwarzenberg, hunting with her cousin, to whom her father has betrothed her, meets with an accident. She is thrown over her horse's head into a river, but Balduin, who has been directed to the spot by his evil genius, plunges in and rescues her. Subsequently Balduin calls to inquire as to her condition at the castle of her father, the count, but be makes a hurried departure when Baron Waldis arrives, the contrast in their appearance discrediting him. His desire to win the countess and to humiliate the baron becomes so pronounced that he readily accedes to the compact suggested by Scapinelli, the old man, who has so pertinaciously dogged his footsteps, particularly when he learns that untold wealth and power will be his when he assigns to the other the right to take from his room whatever he chooses for his own use as he desires. The agreement is signed. Balduin receives a shower of gold and notes as his portion; Scapinelli takes Balduin's soul exposed in concrete form by his shadow. Balduin prosecutes his love affair assiduously and with apparent success, till the baron is informed of it by a jealous gypsy girl. He challenges Balduin to a duel, and the latter, assured of his superiority as a fencer, readily agrees. Count Schwarzenberg learns of the impending duel and appeals to Balduin not to kill "my sister's child, my daughter's future husband, and my heir." Balduin gives his promise, but when he goes to the venue of the duel he meets, his own counterpart stalking away derisively wiping his gory sword on his cloak. Balduin turns and in the far distance sees the dying victim of the deed he swore he would not do. He rushes from the spot horror-stricken. When he regains sufficient composure he makes his way to the castle of the count, but is refused admission. Determined to explain that he had no complicity in the death of the baron, Balduin climbs into a room in which the countess is seated. She receives him coldly, but soon succumbs to his ardent wooing. Just as he seeks to leave her she notices he has no shadow and that the mirror gives no reflection of him; and she drops back affrighted, the ghastly apparition of himself which takes shape in the corner of the room sends Balduin scuttling away from the castle in a paroxysm of terror. He makes a frenzied flight through a woodland estate and the streets of Prague, but wherever he stops to recover his breath he is haunted by the counterpart of himself. He reaches his rooms and draws a murderous looking fire-arm from its case. As the phantasmagorical figure strides towards him with a sinister grin, he fires, and in a few minutes the blood gushes from his own side from a fatal wound.

The daughter of the banker recognizes Dick as her rescuer and the banker takes a special interest in him. Dick's sterling qualities eventually win him a junior partnership with his employer and also the hand of the girl whom he rescued from a watery grave. Proud of his wife and the position in life he has attained, he calls upon his father and a happy reconciliation follows.
