- Flowers love people. Anyway, that is what the flower growing industry is trying to propagate. But whether flowers actually do love people, well, that remains the question. The largest percentage of flowers produced in third world countries, where the pay checks are low and the environment constraints are flexible, is auctioned in The Netherlands. "A Blooming Business" is a poetic documentary about people in Kenya who are imprisoned by the power of the global flower growing industry. The dilemmas of the industry grow painfully clear and a dark world of oppression, sexual abuse and terrible working conditions unfolds. There is only one conclusion possible: the smell of the imported rose is not sweet, but bitter. Pure observation goes unnoticed, hand in hand, with straightforward comments about life and living from the main characters throughout this film. The camera is present and absent at the same time. It reshapes the documentary. With great humanism, Van Zantvoort shows us literally and figuratively another world; a world in which the life of each human being is precious.
- How would it be to suddenly loose consciousness? To loose control of your own body and life? That an attack is constantly on the prowl? Director Jef Monté knows how this feels as he developed epilepsy recently. In this documentary he follows a young woman who wants to live an independent life, but who is prevented from this because of her epilepsy. The film shows the struggle she must make to get control of her own life again.
- A father and a son work in the silver mine of Potosi. One as a miner, the other as a tour guide for the tourists who are discovering Potosi and its fascinating hardships, while bringing changes to the town.
- During a dog training the tension between love, control and powerlessness becomes visible in the reflection between man and dog.
- Day is Done* reveals the extraordinary daily routine of a man who hasn't been outdoors for two years. In an extremely personal way we experience how his life is slipping away slowly.
- For the first time in the history of our earth, more people live in cities than in the countryside. We have become alienated from nature. Stijn leads a different life and has been a shepherd for 15 years and also produces slow food.
- A visual documentary that shows, in fragmented observations, the gaze of a filmmaker who travels the world. A reflection on tourism, loneliness, inequality and our relationship with animals and our planet.
