- Michael goes to talk to Sean in prison and tells him about the deal he struck with Conroy but Sean refuses to co-operate and in the course of events reveals that he killed his mother accidentally with Michael's loaded gun which he had been playing with. Stacey goes to collect Barrington's money and has a confrontation with Michael. On leaving the hotel she is shot dead by Jacob King. McGinty and Henderson enter Anna's house and tie her up and leave a Molotov Cocktail next to her on the orders of Augustine. Augustine blackmails Michael into killing Barrington with photographic evidence of her being held captive. It then transpires that Augustine and Conroy were in league together to bring Michael down. Michael goes to prison, Connie and Sean go into witness protection and Anna gives birth to a baby boy.
- Eddie takes Lillie to hospital for tests, which indicate a tumour. Abbey is set to get jiggy with Clint but bolts when she sees a text from Fabiola on his phone. However he wins her back by climbing up her building to her balcony, annoying a neighbour on the way. Gina takes Harry to a dance but leaves him to go off with Eros, a boy her mother considers unsuitable whilst Dickie, out shopping, gets the come-on from store detective Natalie.
- Concerned that there is not enough money for a decent wedding Lillie borrows a dress from Abbey's modelling agency,giving Clint a close shave when he and Abbey go to the dry cleaners with it and find Fabiana works there. Nothing is said but Fabiana implies it might be. After saving a circus strong man's life Eddie and co-driver Flo persuade the circus folk to provide a big top and performers which makes the reception a huge success. Dickie thwarts Eros from stealing the wedding presents, causing Gina to see Harry's true worth. The happy couple go to their hotel but Lillie is feeling weak.
- Michael meets with Conroy to make a deal and gain the release of Sean. Michael's dad has a heart-attack whilst visiting Sean at the prison. When Michael goes to pick up clothes for John from his house he discovers that John was grassing him to Conroy years earlier and which may have led to Lynn' s death. Sean discovers that Barrington and Stacey are involved and becomes enraged. Meanwhile, Irish detectives begin to hound Anna in Ireland.
- Sent packing by Babs, Dickie parks up outside Clint's flat, pranging Clint's car in the process. Clint, in an effort to impress Abbey, throws a dinner party though he cheats by ordering the food from an Indian takeaway. He invites Lillie and Eddie and bribes Dickie to bring Babs. All goes well until Eddie accuses Lillie, suspended from work after socking an irate husband, of wanting to call off the wedding. This sets Babs and Dickie off and both couples leave--though they do reconcile. Abbey, however, is impressed by Clint's concern for them; whilst Geena, Babs' teenage daughter, starts to twinkle at Eddie and Lillie's elder boy Harry.
- Lillie gets her job back as, at her tribunal, she proves that the alleged victim of her assault, was faking it. Jack is bullied at school because of his bookishness but Gina capitalizes on it and the school bully appoints him tactician for the football team. Babs and Lillie have a girls' night in with Abbey, who tells them she is ready for sex with Clint. However Clint, having taken Dickie to a pole dancing club to cheer him up after rejection by Babs on their wedding anniversary, ends up with dancer Fabiola and has to make a choice. Lillie's propensity for smelling burning rubber leads Eddie to believe she may have a brain tumour as this is a symptom.
- Lillie dies and Eddie dedicates a park bench to her, where he and his sons go to 'commune' with her. Babs and Gina move into Eddie's house to save money as Babs and Dickie grow apart and he takes up with Fabiana, who had come round to show Clint up but moves into the Winnebago. When Abbey realises who she is, she leaves Clint. Harry hops into bed with Gina but Eddie resists the temptation to look in on Babs. Instead he imagines a conversation with Lillie, after which he goes to sleep, dreaming that he is on a trampoline, surrounded by his family and friends.
- For the past fifteen years on her birthday paramedic Eddie has asked long-term partner and mother of his two sons Lillie to marry him. She always refuses,claiming that don't need a marriage licence to be happy. Her friend Babs is irritated by her feckless,unemployed husband Dickie's futile get-rich-quick schemes and is considering leaving him whilst Dickie's brother Clint, usually a sex mad bed-hopper, is smitten by cool,hard-to-get Abbie. When an elderly female patient who spoke glowingly of her happy marriage, dies,Eddie asks Lillie to reconsider but she declines, influenced by seeing too many marriages go wrong at the refuge where she works. However,when she discovers a scrap-book by her younger son Joe 'willing' his parents' marriage she changes her mind and,at her birthday party, to which Clint has brought Abbey who has agreed to date him, she pops the question to Eddie. Babs is less impressed when Dickie buys a winnebago. She makes him sleep in it.

- D.I. Tony Conroy and his team search for Jacob King and the Motorway Crew. Michael and Sean meet at the prison but relations are hostile. Michael and Barrington hatch up a plan to help Barrington escape with Sean, with the help of Augustine Flynn and some creative money laundering. Anna comes to see Michael in Manchester and gets involved involuntarily. Jacob's young brother Benjamin is found at school with the .38 pistol that killed Elijah and it is found to be an organized crime gun. Meanwhile, Jacob tries unsuccessfully to kill Michael and Michael goes after him but he lets him go. Elsewhere, Stacey's relationship with Barrington becomes evident.
- Ex Manchester gangland boss Michael O'Connor, who is now happily settled in rural Ireland, is forced to go back to Manchester when his son Sean is found guilty of the murder of a gang member. The shooting was done by Sean's girlfriend Stacey Cox but in order to protect her Sean takes the blame even though he has no criminal affiliation. Michael must find a way of protecting Sean before he becomes jail bound. Meanwhile, Michael's Irish girlfriend Anna finds out that she is pregnant.

- Hearing that Poppy visited Evan Serena considers asking her probation officer to revoke her parole as she is breach of a restraining clause. However Serena recalls her affair with the bullying Marcus,whom she knew she was sharing with Poppy though only Poppy was convicted of his slaying. At the time Poppy felt the need for solidarity because of his violence but Serena rejected it. Possibly because of this she does not report Poppy though she later finds that Poppy has engineered a meeting with Vee as well as spying on the house at night. Al agrees to help Poppy prove her innocence and suggests they trace Marcus's girlfriend at the time Marlene. However he turns up at Serena's house,announcing that he is a journalist out to get the truth as to what really happened.
- After Al's visit Serena confronts Poppy and warns her to keep away but Poppy is angry that Al lied to her about his interest. He nonetheless vows to help her prove her innocence. Poppy is arrested for breach of her restraining order thanks to Serena's sister Fez and for the first time Evan learns of his wife's past and walks out on her,taking Vee. Serena visits Poppy in her cell and they recall the night of Hansley's murder,which prompts Serena to meet with Al and seek out the dead teacher's girlfriend at the time, Marlene,who now has his child. Having blotted out the past for years Serena discovers that her mother was aware of what happened when Marcus Hansley died and holds the key to the truth which will ultimately exonerate Poppy and allow her to lead a new life with Al.
- Serena leaves Leeds with her doctor husband Evan and their daughter Vee to be close to their terminally ill mother Rachel in the seaside town in which Serena was raised. When the police stop her for speeding Serena panics and it becomes evident that she has a past. A decade and a half earlier,as a school-girl,she had an affair with sexy teacher Marcus Hansley though he forced himself on her and ended up being stabbed to death. At the same time as Serena's return another woman Poppy Carlisle is released from prison after being sentenced for Marcus's murder and goes to live with her mother Liz and stepfather Jim in their pub in the same town. She is befriended by Al,a lifeguard. Poppy has always claimed she was innocent of the murder and seeks out Serena's husband,visiting him as a new patient.
- VIXAL has gone beyond its programming limits and is crashing the financial markets. Alex tries to shut it down, but the system keeps rebooting.
- Alex follows the intruder to a hotel in the red-light district. The man (KARP) claims Alex hired him to engage in sadistic fantasy before killing him - he shows Alex emails to prove it.
- A fatal plane crash. Airline stocks plummet. VIXAL's foresight makes the fund millions but Marieme is concerned about how this will look to regulators. Alex harbours his own concerns when he finds terrorist websites open on his computer.
- The boys go to the British embassy to see if they are clear to leave South Africa but after seeing a lawyer,who promptly disappears,they realize that they are locked in with police cars drawing up outside. They escape via the exit and get rid of the electronic tag on Rick's leg by throwing it over a balcony,it landing on a passing truck and diverting their pursuers. They meet up with Mercedes,who arranges for a taxi to take them to Bloemfontein but the driver panics when he sees an explosion and a gang apparently removing bodies and he dumps the party on the road. Mercedes then gives them a boat and a map but they lose both because they fail to moor the boat properly. They are taken in overnight by the gang,who tell them to keep walking next morning. But Rick sees the tokoloshe again.
- The lads finally make it to the house of former CIA agent Lazaro,who agrees to take their name of the CIA's kill list and let them know how things are doing at home in exchange for their doing his housework. Unbeknown to them however,as he is supposedly wiping their name of the computer another agent is remotely putting them back on again. Lazaro gets them all high on peyote,leading each one to have a different hallucination but next morning when they are feeling drowsy he produces a gun and says that he has orders to kill them in revenge for their killing Maria Gonzalez at Alvo's villa. They are however saved,first by the tokoloshe who tells Rick to flee and then by Mercedes,who shoots Lazaro and tells the CIA that the quartet are all dead before arranging to have them taken back to Cape Town to start the journey home. She waves them off - as,in Rick's case only - does the tokoloshe.
- Two years have passed. Baxter is operating as a lawyer in Cape Town but with false papers,Quinn runs a bar there and is having an affair with a French diplomat's wife. Woody is coaching football and Rick smuggling drugs on the black market which he supplies to the local hospital. He is still having visions of the grotesque dwarf that he saw in the desert - it is a tokoloshe,which foretells bad luck,aptly in his case as he keeps getting arrested. After a woman threatens to expose him for practising without a license Baxter learns that his daughter is getting married and discovers on the Internet that MacKenzie is dead and the CIA shut down. He manages to contact the others,Rick having to be rescued from rehab where the courts have sent him and,reunited,they set off to leave Cape Town and return to England.
- The boys are back in England for the wedding of Baxter's daughter Emma but things end in a fight when Rick catches Quinn dancing rather too close to his ex-wife and a further fight ensues on discovery that Rick tried to sell Alvo's house and signed the others' names without their knowledge which leads to them all being arrested. They decide to return to South Africa where Quinn meets his wife and Baxter reunites with Carmen whilst Woody gets back with Shani and Rick gets a job as a gardener. At their apartment Baxter receives a sinister letter informing him he is to be taken to court over the hire car from Majorca that was destroyed. Quinn's wife is killed when she goes to investigate a noise and it becomes apparent that Dominic is not dead, just crippled, and has returned for revenge.
- The boys find themselves wearing yellow overalls in a vast and virtually deserted prison camp somewhere in the African desert. They have no idea who their captors are and fear that they are terrorists who have robbed them of their spoils to fund an atrocity. Some clue as to why they are there comes when they meet fellow con,the scary ex-soldier Mercedes,who knows how to throw a man in combat. The they meet Alex, a government representative who explains that,in view of their past criminal involvements,they are on a CIA hit list and are soon to be taken to South Africa under a witness protection scheme and given new identities though they must not contact each other. Each is allowed one phone call to a loved one before they board the plane.
- As Lucian D'Abberville continues to pressure Adil into betraying his lover MI5 officer Mortimer arrives at the Halcyon to investigate Toby over leaked information and Toby has cause to be grateful to Freddie and family friend Lord Ambrose for saving him . However Toby suspects Adil of informing on him and ends their affair. Sonny stands up to racists objecting to his relationship with Betsey and Peggy draws closer to Richard after her bereavement and the evacuation of her little girl. Emma is also finding O'Hara attractive as he becomes more helpful to her but the most shocking amatory news comes when Lady Hamilton announces her engagement to D'Abberville, whom both her sons and Richard are beginning to see as an unknown quantity and a possible liability.
- Former CERN scientist turned Hedge Fund CEO Alex Hoffman anonymously receives an antique book at his Geneva mansion. That night, while his wife Gabby sleeps, Alex is attacked and left unconscious by an intruder.
- The hotel prepares for 50th anniversary celebrations: Lady Hamilton's getting into the spirit, but she can't help Toby's anxiety. He attempts to talk to her about Lucian, but is interrupted by the man himself: there seems to be no escape.
- The lads wire transfer their savings and Hector's commission but are still some fifty thousand euros short of Mackenzie's demands. Then Woody remembers that Alvo had a similar sum in his safe following a job he did with Dominic and Maria. They manage to break into the safe and also recover the hidden money from the statue of Mary - during a wedding - but on their way to meet Mackenzie they are stopped by the police and fined so that when they meet up Mackenzie they still have a shortfall to make up.
- Keeping Quinn as hostage Mackenzie charges the lads to pick up supplies to make ecstasy tablets to sell at a local night-club. This they accomplish with help from Carmen although it transpires that the tablets are fake as Mackenzie feels he has to get one over on the club owner. True to his word he releases them and waives the money they owe. Baxter bids farewell to Carmen but agrees to stay in touch. However they discover too late that the ship Mackenzie has put them on is not bound for Barcelona but Morocco.
- Emma joins the WRVS and whilst Richard is fearful for her safety he is proud enough of her to buy her uniform. During a particularly fierce air raid she is shadowed by O' Hara, who risks his life by staying with her throughout the raid to tend the wounded and protect the dead from scavengers, resulting in a better mutual understanding. However the raid claims its first victim from the hotel staff. Lucian sees Adil sneaking out of Toby's room and, whilst assuring Toby of his discretion, seeks to blackmail Adil into revealing more about Toby's hush-hush work. Betsey angers Sonny with her decision to quit his band for more lucrative work - but when he learns that it is to repay him for bribing Gloria to leave a declaration of love follows.
- September 1940: Richard allows Emma to organize a lavish wedding reception for the daughter of Lady Hamilton's friends the Ashworths with Lucian, somewhat reluctantly for fear of gossip, escorting Priscilla Hamilton. Best man Freddie has to console the widow of a fellow airman killed in action but the proceedings are interrupted by an air-raid, forcing the guests to shelter in the basement. Chefs Robbie and Max continue completing the wedding cake with Robbie exhorting Max not to give up hope for his family. Richard and Peggy also shelter from the raid, which destroys her house, but he is disconcerted to meet Douglas, a former WW1 colleague who carries a secret only he and Richard know. Betsey learns that Sonny paid off Gloria whilst the sexual attraction increases not just between Lady Hamilton and Lucian but Toby and barman Adil.
- The lads still have the money but the car is in bits and they are pursued through the desert by a motor cyclist,arriving at a village where an old lady conducts a religious protective rite by drawing a circle of goat's blood,outside of which they must not step,around the village.They hide the money in a statue of the Virgin Mary. However whilst Baxter has sex with Carmen, Quinn steps outside the circle and is caught by ageing Brit Mackenzie,who claims the money is his and he will kill them to retrieve it. When the group look they find that some of the money is gone.Furthermore,Carmen's colleague Victor is dead.
- O'Hara is offered a job in American television but, on learning that he will not be replaced as the London war correspondent, Emma takes him to a hospital for wounded airmen, as a result of which he turns it down. Lucian takes Lady Hamilton on her first ever visit to a cinema, where she is surrounded by ' ordinary people'. As a consequence she makes the effort to befriend staff members though the meeting is somewhat awkward. Band singer Betsey's tarty mother Gloria arrives to see her, to the concern of pianist Sonny, who fears that she has come to sponge off her daughter and bribes her to leave. Richard is also worried by Emma's relationship with Freddie, whom he fears may not return from his next flying mission.
- As France falls to the Nazis the odious Count de St Claire and his secretary Lucian D'Abberville are amongst the refugees staying at the Halcyon. The count makes advances to chambermaid Kate and flies into a rage when his gun disappears. A search of the staff's lockers reveals that Max has stolen a pair of Lord Hamilton's cuff-links and he is arrested. Emma, now assistant manager, feels sorry for him on learning he was hoping to sell them to raise money to help his family come to England and persuades Lady Hamilton to drop charges. He is reinstated at the hotel, to the annoyance of Perry, who is dismissed by Emma. Young page-boy Billy, who took the gun, confronts the count with it on hearing of Kate's experience and the count demands his dismissal. However Richard, learning of the count's philandering reputation at other hotels, conspires with Lucian to make him leave. Freddie also leaves to join his squadron whilst Billy, having turned eighteen, also joins up.
- The trio in the car spot Dominic approaching the villa and run him over,thus saving Quinn. The lads decide to return to England via the mainland but get on the wrong ferry,which lands them on Ibiza. Here they plan to swap the drugs money for legitimate money by gambling it at the casino but Baxter is approached by a mystery woman,who appears to take a shine to him. She is well aware of the nature of their cash and agrees to launder it for them,for a commission. However,no sooner have they received the laundered money than their car is blown up.
- Freddie flies in with his crew-mates, and touches down. There's a brief moment of camaraderie, before he ruefully watches his squadron head towards the mess. He turns the other way: there's a car waiting for him.
- Ellen tries to juggle her new baby with her return to work and her investigation into Paula. She finds evidence that her boss was having an affair but her only lead is Paula's ten-year-old child and a former colleague of Paula's, neither of whom want to speak to her. Paula discovers Ellen's investigation and engineers a humiliation from the client and a warning visit from social services. Ellen eventually confronts Paula and forces her to confess what she's been hiding.
- The friends bury Tiny Blair but are scared when the villa suffers a power cut and flares are fired and believe the Serbs are trying to intimidate them. Maria comes to the villa next day but Woody has his doubts as to whether she really is a detective. However footage from the camcorder proves not only that Alvo was,as suspected,a drug smuggler but that he was dealing,not with Serbian gangsters but corrupt police officers - including Maria,whom Quinn shoots dead as she tries to kill them. Lottie brings the car and everybody decides to return home,except Quinn,who will use most of the drug money to start a new life on the island. But no sooner has the car driven off than Dominic,the corrupt officer in charge of the drugs racket turns up at the villa.
- After another visit from Maria Baxter realises that they are dealing with the Serbian Mafia,who killed the boat's owner Jesus so the group decides to unearth Alvo's corpse and pass it off as that of Jesus.They are interrupted by Tiny Blair,whom they overpower and hold captive,intending to exchange him to the Serbs in return for their own safe conduct off the island. However whilst they are at Lottie's hotel,asking her to drive the car with the euros in to Alvo's villa to deflect attention from themselves somebody kills Tiny,leaving a note 'We told you not to go to the police.'
- Warned by the killer,whom they nickname Tiny Blair,not to alert the police the four friends bury Alvo's body,agreeing on a story that he left the island for the mainland. Rick believes he left his camcorder on the stolen boat but when they arrive they meet two men who,believing that they are the boat's owners,give them three million euros for the cocaine hidden on board.The lads hide the money in the boot of their hire car after which they are indeed visited by the police,headed by detective Maria,who locates the camcorder and thus connects the quartet to the boat.
- All hell breaks loose as first one and then a group of killers in Tony Blair masks pursue the quartet and Carmen is accidentally killed in the melee. It becomes evident that these are the drug smugglers from Majorca out for murderous revenge and the boys are pursued to a beach. Here however they encounter even more gangsters who hood them and force them onto their knees ready to be shot. It looks as if the mad dogs are finally going to be put down.
- After Paula confesses her secret, Ellen thinks she has proof that Paula is disturbed but no one else sees it her way. The office turns against Ellen and she is forced to leave for good. She tries to put Paula behind her but Paula isn't willing to let go. When Ellen encounters Paula's mysterious ex-colleague at an interview, Paula retaliates by driving a wedge between Ellen and her husband. After a catastrophic celebration at Ellen's finished building, her family as well as her career face ruin.
- Ellen gets pregnant after landing a big contract for her firm of architects. She hires Paula as cover but soon fears she's made a terrible mistake. Ellen wants to get back to work quickly but Paula thinks Ellen should be putting her baby at the centre of her life. She wastes no time in moving in on Ellen's bosses, clients and friends and Ellen fears she's being forced out. Everyone thinks Paula is great and Ellen is being paranoid until a site accident puts Ellen's suspicions into overdrive.
- May 1940:- At the Halcyon hotel in London discreet manager Richard Garland turns a blind eye when the promiscuous owner Lord Hamilton smuggles in his flighty mistress Charity Lambert to sit in on a secret meeting of the appeasement party. When his wife Lady Hamilton arrives unexpectedly Richard and his receptionist daughter Emma, assisted by housekeeper Lilian and porter Feldman, act quickly to prevent her from catching the couple together. Emma is mutually attracted to RAF pilot Freddie, the Hamiltons' elder son who turns up with researcher brother Toby but Betsey, the out-spoken dance band singer, warns Emma that Freddie is out of her league. At a party for Freddie his father's indiscretions are common knowledge with the staff and Lady Hamilton despite the pair putting up a united front. They are all observed by American journalist Joe O'Hara, whose plan to expose Hamilton's political stance in a broadcast home leads to disaster.
