Remorseful, Tommy returns home, and after his careful nursing Grizel regains her sanity.

With the aid of Professor Pell, who has been recently fired as school superintendent, Carmel makes a public issue of the sheriff's murder, editorializing in her paper for justice and reform. Pell and Carmel are kidnapped by the bootleggers, but Carmel escapes and alerts the police. The bootleggers are arrested, the sheriff's murder in solved, and Abner Fownes, a politician and one of the town's leading citizens, is uncovered as the leader of the gang.
- Tom, the rambunctious member of the Sawyer clan, takes it upon himself to teach the goody-goody boy of Hannibal, Missouri a lesson and, as Huckleberry Finn, his free-spirited best friend watches, pummels his foe to defeat. At school clever Tom makes mischief a regular practice, but as long as the punishment lands him next to his beloved Becky Thatcher, he remains carefree. After he is unfairly accused of his brother Sid's misdeed, Tom runs away with Huck and Joe Harper. Disguised as pirates, the trio builds a raft and sails down the Mississippi to a deserted island. Back at home, Tom's frantic Aunt Polly calls for a search, and cannons are fired into the river. When the search yields nothing, the boys are declared dead and a funeral is planned. At first tempted to reveal himself, Tom decides later to partake in his own memorial service, and as the townspeople mourn, he and his friends appear in the back of the church. Overcome with relief, Becky and Aunt Polly embrace Tom, forgetting to scold him for his mischief.

He then finds work in a restaurant where he is required to dress as a knight in armor and pose as a statue. On one occasion, Gordon, Helen, and Billy's romantic rival, Tom, enter the restaurant, and Billy is nearly fired when Helen recognizes him. Meanwhile, Gordon plans to merge one of his railroads with a company that is in a dispute with Tom's uncle, an unprincipled financier. Acting on the promise of a generous cash reward, Tom is determined to steal documents relating to the merger. Billy manages to stay at his job for thirty days, and in the process, exposes Tom's scheme, winning Gordon's consent to marry Helen.
- Priscilla Maine, a wealthy young woman, is plagued by visions of menacing people and strange adventures, which she confides to Dr. Philip Fosdick, a young physician. Later, while reading a newspaper account of a crime, Philip recognizes the people from Priscilla's dreams and investigates. He discovers that Priscilla has a twin sister named Nora O'Moore, who has just escaped from the clutches of gang leader Red Carnahan. The criminal stalks Nora and takes revenge by drowning her in a lake. Priscilla has a vision that draws her to the lake, where she finds Carnahan. The gang leader, terrified by Priscilla's resemblance to his victim, is driven by fear to drown himself. Priscilla faints and is nursed back to health by Philip. They then discover that Priscilla's father had married a gypsy who gave birth to twin daughters, then ran off with Nora while Priscilla remained with her father. With the mystery solved, Philip and Priscilla marry.
- The hunter becomes the hunted as Corporal James Kent (Lew Cody), of the Canadian Royal Mounted, fighting for his life, is guided to a secret valley, a refuge for wanted men, by a French-Canadian beauty, Marette Radison (Alma Ruben), with a secret of her own.
- After the death of her tyrannical millionaire father, rebellious Irene Simpson-Bates decides to have a fling with her relatively meager inheritance of $15,000. Leaving her straitlaced sweetheart John Norton behind, Irene goes to New York, where she falls under the spell of unscrupulous Courtenay Urquhart. Although he has no intention of actually marrying Irene, Urquhart persuades her to elope with him and signs them into a hotel as husband and wife. Determined to save the woman he loves, John tricks Urquhart into believing that his British uncle has just left him a large inheritance. The loafer immediately sails for England, and Irene returns to John, her eyes opened and her reputation as yet untainted.
- Living in the New York slums with her lazy father, Bessie takes imaginary voyages to "Dream Valley" on a "yacht" she has built in the backyard. Gilbert Byfield, posing as a poor man while completing his book, falls in love with Bessie and secretly arranges for her to spend a month at the Byfield country estate. Bessie, elated with her new home, believes that her father has finally earned his fortune, but she returns to the tenements when she learns from the jealous Enid Crane that their newfound wealth is a sham. Gilbert visits her in Dream Valley to patch things up and wins her heart.
- A horse-race brings together Kentuckian Natalie Chester and Argentinean Manuel La Tassa. At a party, Pedro De Grossa insults Natalie and Manuel challenges him to a duel. To assure his son's success, Carlos De Grossa hires Gomez to ambush Manuel. While Manuel is recuperating, Natalie discovers the perfidy. She bribes Gomez to expose the De Grossas, Pedro leaves the country, and Manuel finally accepts his duty to participate in his government with the help of Natalie, his new wife.
- Chick Hewes resolves to go straight when he is released from prison, but persecution by the police when he refuses to be a stool pigeon and the lack of concern with which Jerry Brandon kills a slum child with his automobile impel Chick to undertake one more job--at the home of District Attorney Brandon. There Chick discovers Jerry already stealing from his father's safe, but Molly Brandon prevents Chick from being arrested for Jerry's crime. Chick and Molly go west to begin anew.
- A man is employed to tutor the children of an aristocratic family and has an affair with the daughter of the house.
- John Trimble has embezzled and obtains another identity by having a mutilated body buried in his place. He is later arrested for murdering himself. During the trial his mother, before dying from shock, asks him to keep his identity secret since his wife is now married to the Governor and expecting a child.
- Youth leaves his mother at the behest of Ambition and with Love and Hope goes to the city, where he encounters Pleasure and asks Opportunity to wait; but she refuses and leaves him. At the Primrose Path (a cabaret), Pleasure introduces him to Beauty, Wealth, Fashion, and Temptation. Youth's mother dies, and Love sends him a telegram, which is intercepted by Temptation; and when Love comes to the city, she is turned away from the Primrose Path. Chance directs Youth to a gambling house where he loses everything but the ring given him by Love, and he is haunted by Poverty and Delusion. With the exception of Temptation, all have forgotten him. He meets Vice and Habit and finally consents to go with Crime to rob Wealth's house. On the way he hears a church choir singing and decides to go home; with Experience he returns where Love and Hope await him. Ambition again seeks Youth, who with Love at his side starts a new life.

- An idealistic young American during World War I, itching to fight the Germans and not wanting to wait until the U. S. joined the war, journeys to Canada and enlists in the British army. Returned back to England to recuperate from his wounds, he falls in love with the daughter of an Australian minister.
- Luigi, a traveling-show strongman, saves Carmelita from drowning and persuades her to join him. When Luigi kills his assistant, Giuseppe, in a jealous rage, they flee to Algiers, where Luigi joins the Foreign Legion and installs Carmelita as proprietress of a cafe. Marvin, an American legionnaire, falls in love with Carmelita, who has become a favorite of the regiment, but she remains loyal to Luigi out of gratitude. Luigi frames Marvin, who is punished by the authorities. In the ensuing fight between Marvin and Luigi, the strongman is getting the better of the American when Carmelita, who has learned of Luigi's intent to marry Madame La Cantinière, stabs her benefactor. The legionnaires decide to attribute Luigi's death to an Arab; Marvin and Carmelita are united.
- Sincere but struggling sculptor Tommasso (Caruso--bushy moustache, gawky) works in an ornamental plaster shop, but his masterpiece on the side is a bust of his cousin Caroli (Caruso--no moustache, polished), who is the Metropolitan Opera's leading tenor. Tommasso hopes to marry his model Rosa, but her father, restaurant owner Pietro, wants her to find someone more settled and money-conscious, such as the greengrocer Lombardi down the street. Tommasso, he says, throws away his money, such as for a pair of tickets to take Rosa to the opera to see his famed cousin. After the opera, the cousins cross paths in the swanky Galeotto's restaurant, but when neither recognizes the other, Tommasso is generally mocked and Rosa believes him a liar and unworthy. Tommasso must recover his reputation and make a sale, preferably the Caroli bust to his cousin, in order to win Rosa back.
- A down-on-her luck streetwalker is ultimately redeemed by the love of a decent man.
- Giuseppe Franchini lives with his little daughter Francesca and pet bear Bruno on the Italian coast. One day, Giuseppe sees a shipwrecked man offshore and swims to his rescue, but in doing so, he is carried out to sea. Upon his return, he finds that his wife has died of shock at the news of his drowning, and the stranger has taken away the little girl. Years later, Giuseppe travels to America with Bruno where they are arrested for invading an apiary on the Vandergrift estate. Giuseppe is befriended by Vandergrift's daughter Adelaide, but Bruno is sent to jail for his crimes. To pay Bruno's fine, Giuseppe takes a job in a roadhouse owned by John Slade. Here, he learns of Slade's plans to smear Adelaide's fiancé, Craig Winton, the reform candidate for mayor. Giuseppe presents proof of Slade's corruption to Adelaide, who turns it over to her father. When Giuseppe meets Vandergrift, he recognizes him as the man he rescued, but, realizing that Adelaide is happy in her life, he leaves town without letting her know that he is her real father.
- Lopaka, a poor Hawaiian fisherman, falls in love with Kokua, a young girl of royal blood. Her irascible father refuses her hand until Lopaka can bring him two feather cloaks, an impossible stipulation, as no one not of royal blood can touch a cloak under penalty of death. Rollis, a drunken sailor, tries to steal the girl, but is driven away by Lopaka. He then concludes to go to Devil's Mountain and snare the bird from which the feathers for the cloaks are obtained. He goes to the volcano but finds no bird. He encounters an old dying priest of Pele, who agrees to give him a wishing bottle in which Kono, a brother of Pele, is confined. Kono will grant any wish to the bottle's owner, but anyone dying with the bottle in his possession will go to hell and the bottle must be sold for less than paid for it, otherwise it will come back with its menace. Lopaka wishes for wealth and servants and his humble hut turns into a beautiful palace. Kokua and her father join the crowd in front of the palace and the father readily gives her in marriage to Lopaka. Lopaka sells the bottle to his friend, Makale, but angers the Bottle Imp and is stricken with leprosy so that he cannot marry. He finds Makale has sold the bottle and it passes through many hands, but he is unable to secure it again. Each time the bottle is sold for less, being sold for the smallest coin. Rollins gains possession of the bottle and is about to steal Kokua when Lopaka rushes to her aid and the two men fight and fall from a high cliff into the sea, where Lopaka strangles the sailor. With the death of Rollins, the last owner of the bottle, the Imp is freed and goes back to his mountain and the dead volcano gushes forth lava and flames. The gorgeous raiment of Lopaka and Kokua fade into their old rags; the wonderful palace vanishes, but the two are happy together in the fisherman's little hut.
- Betty Wynne is forced to work as a maid in a boarding-house after her mother's death. There she falls in love with one of the residents, Bayard Varick. Another of the lodgers, old Henry Mapleson, so admires Betty's sunny disposition that, in order to promote her well-being, he forges a document suggesting that she is the long-lost granddaughter of millionaire John K. Beeston. The insensitive old businessman, whom nobody loves, softens under Betty's influence and soon comes to love her dearly. Bayard, however, believing that Beeston ruined his father in a business deal years earlier, refuses to visit Betty in the rich man's house. Imagining that Bayard no longer loves her, Betty agrees to Beeston's wish that she marry her cousin, but when Bayard learns of Mapleson's forgery, he hurries to Beeston's estate to claim his sweetheart. The old man is reluctant to give her up but finally relents when he discovers that Bayard is his long-lost grandson.

- While Bill Burnham is jailed for drunkenly shooting up the town, he receives a letter saying that his father has died, his sister Janet is about to marry a worthless count, and the family fortune is in danger. Unable to leave, he convinces his friend, Johnny Wiggins, a motion picture cowboy, to go to his home in Palm Beach, which Bill left as a boy, and impersonate him. Although Johnny's Western manner irritates Janet and her aunt, they put up with him because Bill's sanction for Janet's marriage is needed for her to receive her inheritance. When the count discovers that Johnny is not Bill, he tries to elope with Janet, but is prevented when Johnny lassoes him from his moving automobile. After Johnny forces crooked broker Milton C. Milton, at gunpoint, to make restitution for the losses Janet suffered through Milton's bad stock investments, Johnny marries Ruth, the maid, and leaves, promising that when Bill returns, things will get livelier.
- David Corson is a Quaker who is admired by members of his community for his spiritual ways. He has a crisis of faith when a snake-oil salesman named Dr. Paracelsus arrives in town with a young gypsy named Pepeeta. Thinking Pepeeta is Paracelsus' daughter, he becomes enamored of her and joins Paracelsus and Pepeeta as they travel about the countryside. He eventually discovers Pepeeta is Paracelsus' wife. David descends into drunkenness and gambling, and has a fight with Paracelsus, leaving him for dead. David then marries Pepeeta. Eventually, David meets Paracelsus, who was not killed, but was blinded in the fight. David, feeling remorse, allows Paracelsus to try to stab him, but Paracelsus drops dead in the attempt. David, with the help of Pepeeta, begins to regain his faith.

So Elton goes on a tour of Europe, returns a refined gentleman, and marries Phoebe. But now Phoebe feels he has lost some of his charm. Then she thinks he is having a fling with her cousin Sophia. So she decides the best solution is for Elton to return to his original environment out west. She feigns ill health, and persuades him to move, and gradually he becomes the man she fell in love with. Then Elton confesses that he had been acting the part of an Eastern gentleman to teach Phoebe a lesson.

- Jimmy Gilley is engaged to Fanny Blaine. Jimmy would like to live in a more luxurious style, so he and Fanny urge her sister Virginia to marry wealthy Robert Stafford although she doesn't love him. She does so and the couple is happy for a time. But Robert begins drinking and eventually mistreats Virginia until she is forced to leave him. Robert hopes for her return and quits drinking. But pride and misunderstanding block the way for renewed romance.
