- She was an animal-rights activist for humane living conditions for chickens, turkeys and other poultry, crusading against the poultry industry and turning her home into a sanctuary. She founded United Poultry Concerns (UPC), a nonprofit organization, in 1990 and led it until her death.
She attended Lock Haven State College (now Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania). She took graduate courses in English literature, receiving a master's degree from Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania) and a doctorate from the University of Maryland.
