- Born on the Oglala Sioux reservation, the daughter of an Egyptian-born medical doctor and a Baltimore native of German ancestry, Gulnar Khieralla finished high school in Chicago at the age of fifteen and would subsequently earn a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, specializing in Islamic art. In a teaching career of over thirty years, culminating as head of the art department at Florida State University, she wrote a number of books and papers and also served as president of the Southeastern College Art Conference in 1958. She was married to Gerry Bosch, a noted artist.
