The potential that this episode had is great, except that they did many things wrong from my point of view. Lazy writing ruined the entire white walkers plot. Let me point out what I didn't like:
1) Amazing intro from Milissandra with her igniting the sowrds of the entire Dothraki army but to what end? They all died in the next minute. How was this a battle plan? The mighty Dothraki army (the most skilled on land warriors) just died in 1 minute.
2) why and how did Sam survive the war? We saw him ON THE GROUND waving his dragon glass left and right, how did he managed to stay alive in that situation? (Remmber that the dead killed the Dothraki army in one minute).
3) I feel like they chose the right person to kill the night king which is Arya. They tied it well to the phrase that milissandra said in the early seasons about how she said to Arya that she'll kill "blue eyes", but the execution was horrible. Why was the most important kill in GOT performed so badly? Where did she jump from? The night king was in the middle of the pit near the tree surrounded by all the white walkers and she just appeared mid air behind him. Couldn't they just make her drop from the freaking tree?
4) Why did they show us the some characters (brienne, Jaime, Gendry..) being drowned by the dead and then they all ended up surviving? Such cliche and not GOT standards at all.
5) I could let all the above slide but the fact that they ended the war with the dead like this ... is unforgivable. What about their 8000 years old unfinished origin story? Why did they come back now? Why didn't the first men and children of the forest kill the night king in the first place if he is so vulnerable? Is one night battle really the way to end the War with the dead that started from the first moment of the show 9 years ago?
It feels like all that matters are the visuals which game of thrones does not need to be a great show.
