Variety reports that Netflix is in negotiations to produce the live-action adaptation of the manga/anime “Death Note.” Director Adam Wingard (“You”Re Next”, “The Guest”) is signed on to direct the adaptation with a script by Jeremy Slater.
Actors Nat Wolff (“Paper Towns”) and Margaret Qualley (“The Leftovers”) are the only official confirmed cast members; “Death Note” is based on the Japanese Manga which tells the story of high-school student Light Yagami who discovers he is in the possession of a supernatural notebook, given to him by a shinigami or God of Death, with the power to kill anyone whose name is written in the notebook.
Sources say Stx Entertainment and Lionsgate were among the other studios eyeing the property until Netflix’s threw in the highest bid to acquire “Death Note” with a projected budget in the $40 million-$50 million range with a production date scheduled for June this year.
