- He majored in journalism at Syracuse University, and received a master's degree in American civilization from Harvard University. He served as an Air Force intelligence officer before starting his journalism career with the Long Island Daily Press.
- He was a journalist who headed Newsweek's Washington bureau for 20 years, during the height of the Vietnam War and Watergate scandal. He was hired to replace Ben Bradlee after Bradlee joined the Washington Post. In 1986, he moved to U.S. News, where he helped shape the magazine's editorial direction. He also became executive editor of the magazine's increasingly popular guide to the country's leading colleges.
