This review of “We Feed People” was first published March 19, 2022, after its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival.
Though he is just one man, José Andrés has the energy and drive of dozens. After arriving in New York from Spain in 1991, his outsized talents and personality propelled him to fame as one of the first modern celebrity chefs. His D.C. hotspot Jaleo kicked off an expansion that eventually encompassed around 30 restaurants, cookbooks, a range of kitchen products, classes at major universities and TV appearances.
But as Ron Howard chronicles in “We Feed People,” the closer Andrés got to having it all, the more aware he became of how many others had nothing.
Andrés’ Ngo, World Central Kitchen, started in 2010 but kicked into high gear in 2017 in response to Puerto Rico’s Hurricane Maria. When he faced bureaucratic obstacles from government organizations he pushed them aside impatiently, in a quest to establish his own,...

Russian missiles raining down on central Kharkiv, Ukraine yesterday killed two people and injured 18. Among the latter group were workers at celebrity chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, a charitable effort which has fanned out across the country to feed those effected by the war there.
Wck CEO Nate Mook announced the terrible news on Twitter writing, “An update I hoped I’d never have to make. I’m at a @WCKitchen restaurant in Kharkiv, where less than 24 hours ago I was meeting with their amazing team. Today, a missile stuck. 4 staff were wounded. This is the reality here—cooking is a heroic act of bravery.”
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, has been hammered by Russian shelling all week with dozens killed, including at least three children.
Amid the destruction, Andrés himself posted an update on the Wck staff: “To everyone caring and sending good wishes to the team in Kharkiv,...

Bloomberg Philanthropies and World Central Kitchen today announced a partnership to provide fresh daily meals for the 30,000 healthcare workers on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic at NYC Health + Hospitals’ 11 acute care hospitals and five post-acute long-term care facilities across the city’s five boroughs.
Mike Bloomberg’s $6 million gift makes it possible for World Central Kitchen to begin food service operations on April 15, at two locations, and go live across all NYC Health + Hospitals facilities by Monday, April 27.
The collaboration will feed all NYC Health + Hospitals hospital, acute, and post-acute care staff plus additional personnel who have joined their ranks at these facilities, regardless of their department, discipline, or tour, seven days a week, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. from a uniquely designed grab-and-go “cafeteria.” World Central Kitchen and NYC Health + Hospitals have strategized a variety of internal and external set-ups tailored to each individual facility’s needs, ensuring...

Director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer are teaming with National Geographic Documentary Films for a movie about chef José Andrés and his humanitarian work through World Central Kitchen.
“Serving people a plate of fresh food after a disaster is more than just about calories to fill them up. A hot meal is comfort, dignity, hope — a sign that someone cares and that tomorrow will be better,” Andrés said. “From Puerto Rico to the Bahamas to Mozambique, I’ve seen how important quick action and constant adaptation are to reach communities in need with the urgency of now. I’m excited to work with National Geographic, along with Ron and the Imagine team, to tell World Central Kitchen’s story and show how powerful food is in the fight to heal people and the planet.”
Andrés and the World Central Kitchen team have served more than 16 million meals to date.

Ron Howard is continuing his relationship with National Geographic and is set to direct another documentary film for the studio, this time focused on the founder of the nonprofit organization World Central Kitchen, chef and humanitarian Jose Andres, National Geographic announced Thursday.
Howard will direct the documentary that will focus on the work of Andres helping to rebuild nations in the wake of disasters and providing healthy food to those affected. Howard will have access to World Central Kitchen’s archives and will follow Andres around the globe, including his work in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Dorian from September of last year.
The untitled film continues the relationship after Howard directed “Rebuilding Paradise” for National Geographic about the Paradise wildfires. The film premiered at Sundance early this year.

“We’re going to make a lot of people happy today,” chef Tyler Florence promised recently on Instagram as he stirred a massive stock pot of Thai green curry. Florence and a team of World Central Kitchen volunteers were feeding first responders and evacuees of the Kincade Fire, which hit Sonoma Country, at the Santa Rosa County Fairgrounds. More than 6,000 hot meals were served daily during the firestorm’s peak.
Florence, who calls Northern California home, will launch the 11th season of “The Great Food Truck Race” this month, which he hosts. Hosting and being part of TV shows is only one of his responsibilities. He recently established a lifestyle content and production company, Monarch Collective, producing the behind-the-scenes extras for “Race” and other assignments. “The Extra Mile” provides bonus content surrounding “The Great Food Truck Race.”
Slated for a 2020 opening, Florence’s steakhouse Miller & Lux will adjoin San Francisco...
