Bold Speeches from Auteurs and Comfy Couches: IndieWire Honors 2023 Is the Awards Show Like No Other
IndieWire Honors recognized some of the biggest movies and TV shows of the year last night, including “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Beef,” and “John Wick: Chapter 4,” but the filmmakers’ speeches reflected how their current work couldn’t exist without the support they received early in their careers — much of it from IndieWire.
Todd Haynes, director of Netflix marquee title “May December,” accepted the Visionary Award with a memory of screening his breakout short “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” to rave reviews before the cease-and-desists from her estate rolled in. Greta Gerwig, writer-director of Warner Bros. global blockbuster “Barbie” and recipient of the Auteur Award, recalled doing her very first interviews with Anne Thompson for her solo directorial debut “Lady Bird” at Telluride.
Lily Gladstone upped the ante: In receiving breakout the Performance Award for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” she used her time to talk about the...

Gabbi Reynolds has been sent to check some property the developer she works for has bought near Jerome, the largest ghost town in Arizona. That lets Woman in the Maze’s director Mitesh Kumar Patel open the film with a long shot of Gabbi driving a corvette convertible through the scenic desert to the mansion she’s rented as a song that makes you want to shove ice picks in your ears plays.
After fielding a phone call from a friend and telling her the place isn’t haunted, “It’s even bigger than the pictures on the website, and it’s dirt cheap”, usually sure signs a house is infested with ghosts, she immediately starts hearing strange noises and her reflection in...

On December 6, the 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.
Hours away from attending the 33rd annual Gotham Awards as a nominee for both producing and acting in “I’m a Virgo,” an exuberant Jharrel Jerome, sitting inside The Beekman Hotel in New York, says “I’m ready to go do anything now.”
While he came off a couple of years out the spotlight with a whole surge of acclaimed 2023 projects like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and Max series “Full Circle,” it is the aforementioned Prime Video satire helmed by Boots Riley that’s earned him the Performance Award at IndieWire Honors on December 6 in Los Angeles, and become the most transformative experience for him — though playing the 13-foot-tall Cootie did not actually require putting the 5-foot-8-inch actor into the taffy puller.

Ahead of her run for mayor of Houston, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) has apologized for a leaked audio recording that captured her berating a staff member.
The recording was leaked to ABC 13 on Tuesday and was reported to be from “at least half a decade ago.” According to the outlet, Jackson Lee uses 17 curse words in the under-two-minute conversation.
“To anyone who has listened to this recording with concern, I am regretful and hope you will judge me not by something trotted out by a political opponent, that worked hard to exploit this, and backed by extreme Republican supporters on the very day polls open but from what I’ve delivered to Houstonians over my years of public service,” said Jackson Lee in a statement.
“I know that I am not perfect,” she continued. “At heart, I am someone who tells it straight. I know that as much as that is a strength,...
