Rafael Durand(II)
- Composer
- Sound Department
Born in 1987 in Mexico City, Rafael Durand has been working in many big and small music studios composing and producing music for publicity, documentaries and original music for artists from the age of 19.
He constantly releases music as part of the band Frege and his experimental solo project Siifoo. Both are heavily influenced by mixed-meter composition. Frege's music has been described by some press articles as fragmented pop and electro-soul and it's a seamless blend between complex rhythmical ideas and simple repetitive vocal melodies that enables the listener to forget about the mixed-meter complexity that holds the music continuously flowing and changing. Frege have had collaborations with artists such as Simon Balthazar (Fanfarlo, Swoon), La Chica and Tessa Ia.
Durand collaborates with other musicians and artists around the world. As a music producer he've worked with Gordon Raphael (Producer of The Strokes, Blonde Redhead and more), Simon Balthazar, Patterns, La Chica, Pollo Bruxo, Noa Sainz, Bicho Blanco, Leonardo de Lozanne, An An and many more. In dance, he composed music for internationally acclaimed dance company Nohbords for three pieces: La Piel, Solsticio and C-ro. In film he was awarded for best music by the festival 48hrs Film Project for the short film Numen, he also composed score for the short film El Cielo en el Lago and the feature film El Vestido (in collaboration with Simon Balthazar).
In visual arts he produced cover art for Swoon's debut album, The Guadaloops Lumina videoclip, Kris Berle's State of Mind single and more. He also collaborates with other multidisciplinary artists such as Tania Reza, Natalia Gomez and Diego Mur. His work has been exhibited in France, Canada and Mexico. He's given lectures and workshops on code and art at Mexico's Art Laboratory Alameda and Center of Digital Culture and Art Location.
Durand's unique mix of interests and studies of technology; analog equipment and algorithmic composition techniques on one hand and music theory; his love for classical, modern and contemporary masters and jazz music on the other, is an effort to consolidate a relationship between art and technology, analog and digital, traditional and modern into one single scrutiny.
