Psychologist who was instrumental in the successful effort to persuade the American Psychiatric Association to stop classifying homosexuality as a mental disorder.
In 2011, he was awarded the American Psychological Foundation's gold medal for lifetime achievement.
He studied education at the State University of New York at New Paltz and was an elementary school teacher. He later became a gay rights activist and author.
