ReviewThe film, directed by debut filmmaker Madonne Ashwin, is a satire on elections and aims to serve as a reminder to the electorate to vote wisely.Sowmya RajendranScreengrabMandela premiered on television two days before Tamil Nadu was set to vote, and a day before on Ott platform Netflix. The timing could not have been more perfect. The film, directed by debut filmmaker Madonne Ashwin, is a satire on elections and aims to serve as a reminder to the electorate to vote wisely. Yogi Babu has proved to be a fine actor in films where he has been allowed to perform beyond the usual body shaming comedy. In Mandela, the actor is understated as Smile aka Ilichavayan who goes on to be renamed as Nelson Mandela. The film is set in a Tamil Nadu village called Soorankudy where two warring caste groups, the Vadakkoorans and Therkkoorans, cannot see eye to eye.

"Cutting and shaving." Y Not Studios has released a first look teaser trailer for an upcoming Indian comedy titled Mandela, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Madonne Ashwin. This Tamil-language localized comedy is a commentary on politics in India, and very timely as satire about elections in the country. The film tells the story of a man who lands from overseas to vote in his tiny town, but is pulled up for suspicious identity. The name he gives to the authorities? Nelson Mandela. Ha. That explains the title! Early word is that the film, "will make you laugh, it will make you think. It will make you vote wisely..." Indian megastar Yogi Babu stars as Mr. "Mandela", along with Sangili Murugan, Sheela Rajkumar, and Kanna Ravi. I'm always happy to feature films from around the world, to get a taste of what cinema is like in different countries. To watch this teaser with English subtitles,...

Film ReviewWhat little change that a 'Paraiyerum Perumal' and 'Asuran' has wrought, can be damaged by a movie like Draupathi. Priyanka ThirumurthyIt was quarter to 11 in the morning, and the scheduled show for Draupathi, a Tamil film directed by Mohan G was delayed. Renting the air were screams of delight coming from within the hall where the movie's climax was still underway. This vocal expression of approval continued as the crowds streamed out after the movie, and increased when they noticed the film's protagonist Richard Rishi leaving the theatre, waving to male fans of all ages. The fanatic shouts only grew in volume as I entered the cinema hall to witness a movie which reduced women to property, demonised a community and fanned casteist sentiments to the audience in the garb of 'rich vs poor' narrative. As its trailer indicates, Draupathi is a film which carries propaganda against inter-caste marriages.

KollywoodThe film has great performances and a skillfully woven screenplay working to its advantage.Priyanka ThirumurthyThe reputation of the National Award winning film To Let preceded its release in Tamil Nadu. So, to say that the expectations surrounding the film were enormous, wouldn't be inaccurate. And while director's Chezhiyan movie is gripping in its portrayal of a couple's struggle to find a rented home in the city of Chennai, it falls short of being truly moving. To Let showcases the 30-day journey of a lower middle class couple who is looking to move from one rented accommodation to another in the city, after being unceremoniously asked to leave by their landlord. Through the lives of Elangovan (Santhosh Sreeram), an aspiring filmmaker, his homemaker wife Amudha (Sheela Rajkumar) and their kindergartner son Siddharth (Dharun), the film explores the strife of families who do not have a steady income or 'respectable' job,...
