Claire Denis, Virginie Despentes snubs have triggered a new debate over how the French Academy is run.
France’s annual César awards ceremony is one of the most prestigious and glamorous nights of the year for the French film industry. But the 1,700 guests may well be dusting off their gowns and tuxes with a sense of trepidation for this year’s event on February 28.

The new Cannes Film Festival harassment hotline is receiving multiple calls per day, the festival has told us. According to France’s Equality Minister Marlène Schiappa, one complaint from an “Anglo-Saxon woman”, has been escalated to the local police.
The festival was unable to provide further information on the nature of the police complaint but told us that the hotline had received “a few calls” each day of the festival, which began on Tuesday. These were mostly from general public rather than industry professionals, a spokesperson said.
Three employees staff the hotline, which operates between 9am-2am. The operators speak multiple languages. A festival spokesperson told us: “The hotline staff can provide advice on what to do but can also directly contact the relevant professionals, starting of course with the festival security staff but also police, hospitals, medical teams etc. The workers are also able to accompany the victims to help with translations,...

The organisers of the Cannes Film Festival in the post-Weinstein era have decided to take firm action to prevent “harassment, violence, and abuse” by setting up a dedicated hotline for the public to report instances and seek help.
The Festival says that "the time has come to speak out, because there must be zero tolerance with sexual harassment or abuse of any kind.” The hotline has been established in partnership with the French Ministry of Gender Equality.
The move is part of "a firm approach to preventing sexual harassment, and to stand shoulder to shoulder with victims.” The dedicated number, +33 (0)4 92 99 80 09, was available from yesterday. The initiative is designed to help people who have experienced sexual harassment or physical or emotional abuse, by offering appropriate support.
By calling this number, victims can share their experience with Festival teams,...

Cannes and the French government are teaming up to launch a sexual harassment hotline at the festival, which gets underway next month. The move comes after the #MeToo and Time’s Up campaigns during which Harvey Weinstein was accused of assaulting women at the iconic event.
At a press conference in Paris today, Marlène Schiappa, France’s gender equality minister, said industry would be warned to watch their behavior when they arrive at the festival, which will distribute flyers about harassment and its legal punishments. No further details were revealed about the nature of the phone line.
