Directors Guild of America president Thomas Schlamme and national executive director Russell Hollander have spoken out against the death of George Floyd and racism in the U.S.
“As our nation mourns the senseless killing of George Floyd and so many other people of color, the Directors Guild of America stands in solidarity with those peaceful voices of frustration calling for the end of institutional, systemic racism,” Schlamme and Hollander said Tuesday. “This tragic incident once again shines a harsh light on the reality of our unequal justice system, one which is baked deep in the history of our country.”
“Statements of support are important but unless we are honest enough to look at ourselves and our institutions, we will never move past this injustice and begin the hard work of real change,” they said. “We at the DGA are committed to that change and will not let this moment be forgotten.

Hollywood companies have issued statements of solidarity and sadness as regions across the Us braced themselves for further trouble following an explosive weekend of protest over the killing of George Floyd.
On Monday Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Tony Vinciquerra sent an internal memo that read, “We stand in solidarity with the Black community and the peaceful protesters in this movement. It is unfortunate that the movement’s central message of racial justice and equality is being clouded by a non-peaceful criminal element that is infiltrating these protests.

SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David P. White have spoken out against the death of George Floyd and racism in the U.S. after days of protests around the country.
“The murder of George Floyd is deeply emblematic of a corrosive inequality and injustice at the heart of America,” Carteris and White said Sunday. “As protests spread across the country it is not enough to condemn injustice. It’s not enough to demand change. We must recognize that racism lives in our culture and only we can change that. We must speak up in the face of injustice and fight back against the indignities our fellow citizens face every day. We must be defenders and allies. We must be better than this.”
WGA West President David Goodman also issued a statement Sunday, in which he asserted that Los Angeles Police Dept. officers had fired rubber bullets...

SAG-aftra has engaged public health expert Jonathan E. Fielding to join its team of specialists advising the union in developing and implementing new safety protocols for preventing the spread of Covid-19 when production resumes.
“Covid-19 remains a most serious health threat to all those who want and need to return to work. Therefore developing guidelines to safeguard people’s health as they work is a critical element of reopening this important industry,” Fielding said in a statement.
The union made the announcement Wednesday. Fielding served for 16 years as the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and is a distinguished professor at UCLA in the Fielding School of Public Health and the Geffen School of Medicine. His chief objective will be to work with union leaders to create a set of protocols that establish minimum safety standards and maximize the mitigation of risks associated with traditional modes of production.

SAG-aftra announced on Thursday that union employees will be furloughed or have hours reduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic as part of a $96 million budget approved by the executive committee.
“Employees whose workloads have been eliminated by the production shutdown will be furloughed until the industry returns to work,” the union said in a statement. “Other employees will be placed on a reduced-hours schedule to correspond to their decreased workload during this time. These measures will be implemented in a manner that takes advantage of available federal and state programs to help replace lost income for affected personnel.”

The budget includes $5 million from reserve funds and is for the fiscal year beginning May 1. The guild says that the budget “comes amidst financial projections of the industry’s sustained decline in production activity and the subsequent impact on budget.
