John started screenwriting later in life. After migrating from New Zealand to the U.S. in 2016, he won an award as a documentary filmmaker for the true story of black Mississippi artist M.B. Mayfield, which is the subject of John's first feature screenplay - Door Ajar. Drama and dark comedy inspired by the 2000's golden age of television and '70s, '80s, and '90s filmmaker-driven cinema influence John's writing. A Pacific Islander born during the sixties to Samoan parents, who were staunch Seventh Day Adventists in New Zealand, left an indelible imprint on John. It resulted in work he describes as "funny, sometimes bleak yet charming and crudely honest in an endearing fashion." Like the time, aged twelve, John hitchhiked a hundred miles with a flat tire during a family vacation to get it fixed after losing a coin toss to his dad. He's almost certain that that and other weird and wonderful family experiences have impacted his storytelling.
