Exclusive: MGM Television has optioned Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff’s bestselling Ya sci-fi thriller Aurora Rising, to develop as a TV series. MGM Television will produce and MGM will internationally distribute the series. They are currently out to showrunners and writers.
The novel, which was published on May 7, is from Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books.
Set in the year 2380, Aurora Rising follows Ty Jones, the top cadet of the Aurora Academy, and his unwanted squad of misfits and losers as they slowly realize that the girl they rescued from hundreds of years of cryo-sleep may be the catalyst for a war millions of years in the making. The book, the first in the Aurora Cycle, is slated for publication in ten foreign territories, with more in the works.
Bill Todman Jr. and Edward Millstein will executive produce with Limor Hakim co-producing for Level 1 Entertainment. Kaufman and Kristoff will serve as consulting producers. Max Kisbye, MGM’s Executive Vice President, Television Development and Production and Rob Hochberg, Director, Television Development and Production, will oversee the series for MGM Television.
“Amie and Jay have created something really special with Aurora Rising. Their novel blends comedy, action and heart seamlessly in such a wonderful way. We are all looking forward to working with them, Bill and the whole creative team at Level 1 to bring this impressive story to television,” said Steve Stark, MGM President, Television Production and Development.
“We are beyond excited to be working with MGM Television, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff to make this epic space opera into a fantastic television series,” said Todman and Milstein.
MGM Television is also developing Kaufman’s bestselling Starbound Trilogy, co-written by Meagan Spooner. Eric Balfour, Stephanie Varella, Martin Berneman and Warren Littlefield are executive producing.
Kaufman and Kristoff are represented by Stephen Moore at The Kohner Agency.

Director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) is about to take on a new sci-fi film project called Unearthed. The film is based on an upcoming Ya novel, and Columbia Pictures picked up the rights from its authors Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner.
This actually sounds like a pretty cool and adventurous sci-fi story. Variety gives us a breakdown of what that story entails:
Set in a distant future where Earth has been undone by environmental disaster, Unearthed sees a scholar and a scavenger reluctantly team up to venture to the planet of a now-extinct alien race. With the promise of a salve for Earth, the two must work together to explore an ancient alien temple and finds its life-altering secrets. But the deeper they go, the more the two discover they may not be helping Earth, but rather hastening its destruction.

Columbia Pictures has picked up Unearthed, a sci-fi adventure that has Doug Liman attached to direct.
Jez and John Henry Butterworth are writing the script for the project, which adapts the upcoming Ya book by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. Cross Creek Pictures’ Tyler Thompson will produce along with Liman.
The project was initially being developed by Cross Creek, which acquired the rights last year. The company is also behind Liman’s upcoming Tom Cruise movie, American Made. Cross Creek will co-finance under its deal with Columbia, which is eyeing the title as a potential franchise.

Doug Liman must be tired, because he's been making headlines for more than a week now. First it was announced that he was bringing Jumper back to life in a YouTube Red digital series, then he talked about turning the comic book movie genre on its head with Justice League Dark, and on Friday, we wrote about his claims of how his Edge of Tomorrow 2 will "revolutionize the way people make sequels." In addition to all of that, Deadline reports that Liman is now attached to direct yet another movie, and this one sounds like it could be a future favorite of those of you who love sci-fi adventure movies.
Liman will direct Unearthed, a film adaptation of an upcoming book written by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. Here's the description:
