- His cookbooks, classes, and frequent PBS TV appearances helped popularize Italian cooking in the USA.
- Since both his parents worked outside the home, he often had to prepare lunch and dinner for the family, with the help of his grandmother and two aunts.
- He studied at the University of Florence and the University of Rome before getting a job teaching Italian to visiting American college students. He continued developing his cooking skills, and hosted dinner parties at the end of each semester. In 1972, he founded a cooking school in Florence.
