- Francis Worth Scanland Jr. was born on September 17, 1912 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He died on August 12, 2002.
- A distinguished veteran of the United States Navy, Francis Scanland served from 1934 to 1964 with his final rank being Captain. His decorations included the Bronze Star, Silver Star, Navy Cross, and Legion of Merit. He was the commander of the submarine USS Hawkbill (SS-366) during all five of that vessel's war patrols during World War II.
- His father, Francis Worth Scanland Sr., also served in World War II and like his son, was a recipient of the Navy Cross. This appears to be the only case of both a father and son receiving this award during that conflict.
