Teenage comedy-drama or high school comedy-drama tends to repeat itself, with all the movies and series in the genre having explored similar concerns and complexities. Only a certain few cinemas we have come across stand out for all the right reasons: Mean Girls, 10 Things I Hate About You, and the very recent You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
Davey and Jonesie’s Locker is a weird teenage drama that involves two young girls trying to make sense of their lives when people around them convince them they aren’t normal, and as a result, they accidentally travel into another universe that has the same school but a different premise and set-up. "It kinda just sounds like you're making up science." Strap in for some high school multiverse chaos! Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a comedy series titled Davey & Jonesie's Locker, produced by both Prime Video & Hulu. It's ready to launch for streaming later in March. Veronika Slowikowska stars as Davey and Jaelynn Thora Brooks as Jonesie - best friends. The two feel out of step with their peers and the banal backdrops of their high school. When they discover their locker is actually a portal to a Multiverse, they set off on new adventures. Alas, these adventures are set in alternate versions of their high school, with offbeat iterations of their classmates. The cast also includes Dan Beirne as disgraced quantum physicist turned science teacher, Mr. Schneider, who plays a key role; along with Emily Piggford, Nikko Angelo Hinayo, Kevin Lauta Osea, Erika Swayze, and showrunner Evany Rosen as the school's principal.

Hovvdy are back, and have announced a new self-titled double album and a string of 2024 UK/Europe tour dates. The band also shared the album’s latest single, “Forever.”
Due out April 26th via Arts & Crafts, Hovvdy will be the Austin, Texas indie duo’s fifth full-length studio album, following 2021’s True Love. Spanning 19 tracks, the new album was co-produced by Hovvdy’s Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, along with Andrew Sarlo and Bennett Littlejohn.
Speaking about Hovvdy, Martin cited themes of family and empathy as influential factors. “It’s a full circle, because lots of my songs, in adulthood, deal with looking back and seeing your parents as just individuals struggling through life — and trying to have more empathy or understanding,” he said in a statement. “And now Will is diving in from the opposite side as a new parent, grappling with all that.”

Continuing my new Christmas movie watching for Nerdly, EXmas features on the Amazon-linked app Freevee, and sees Graham (Robbie Amell) surprise his family at Christmas only to discover that his ex-fiancée, Ali (Leighton Meester) had been invited, and is already there celebrating the holiday with his family. And with neither wanting to leave, they will have to put up with each other, all while keeping the family happy.
Christmas is the only time you will catch me watching this kind of rom-com, as I usually find the stories too repetitive and uninteresting. I, and most audiences watching, know exactly what is going to happen in this type of movie, even before I’ve watched it but that really doesn’t make any difference in my enjoyment of it.

EXmas is a delightful holiday rom-com featuring some classic but relatable tropes. While we may not find our ex at our holiday table, most of us have longed for a holiday like the Stroops share.
It features charismatic stars, including Robbie Amell as Grham and Leighton Meester as Ali. Michael Hitchcock and Kathryn Greenwood were hilarious and Graham’s holiday-obsessed parents.
Jonah Feingold loves directing com-coms, and he’s had great success with his two prior films, Dating in New York and At Midnight. We were excited to speak with him about how he directed Amazon Freevee’s EXmas.
Feingold spoke with us during a recent virtual press day about which holiday films inspired him, how he selected the cast, and how essential the family dynamics were to this film.
Check it out below.

Leighton Meester and Robbie Amell play exes with a vendetta in the upcoming Amazon Freevee rom-com “EXmas,” except unlike other former flames, ex-fiancés Ali (Meester) and Graham (Amell) are dealing with their tensions under the same roof.
In an exclusive clip shared with TheWrap, Ali and Graham weather the cold while fishing in a lodge with Graham’s father and brother when Graham’s dad asks the pair if they have been dating since breaking up.
“Everyone,” Graham replies, adding that he’s “not discriminating against any dating app” and is “going head-first.”
“Wow, that’s disgusting,” Ali responds in the clip.
As the group shivers in the freezing temperatures, Ali asks the family to move the heater closer to her, to which Graham responds “no, you don’t have to do that — it’s fine where it is.”
“It’s getting everybody I think,” Graham insists.

The premise of Michael Rees’ latest comedy short Middle Sized Things is so delightfully off-kilter that it needs to be seen to be fully grasped. It follows a guest speaker at college who’s presenting his core thesis, the notion that the properties of scale have no direct correlation with something’s moral status. It’s a conceptual idea that makes no sense whatsoever but Rees uses the confidence and determination of his cocksure academic to expose the fragile ego underneath which, combined with an ensemble cast who sell the ridiculousness of the situation wonderfully, makes the short a must-see. With Middle Sized Things having arrived online, Dn joined Rees for a conversation about his creative process as a comedy writer/director, his aversion to sitting on ideas for too long, and the benefits his experience as an editor brings to his filmmaking.

As Canadian heritage minister Pablo Rodriguez looks to modernize what qualifies as a Canadian film or TV series for U.S. streamers now obligated by law to invest in local content, he has a message for Hollywood.
“As Canadians, we know, we love you guys, our American friends. We love you. But we’re different, We’re not better. We’re not worse. We’re just different,” Rodriguez told the Banff World Media Festival as he looks to American media players to bring Canada’s TV and film productions to international markets.
Rodriguez’s Liberal government in Ottawa recently passed into law Bill C-11 to compel U.S. digital players including streamers to, for the first time, invest in Canadian-content production.
But the Crtc, which regulates the Canadian broadcast industry, will now hold hearings to establish the amount of investment expected from the U.S. streamers into local content, as local broadcasters have long done.
