Alex Burger is based in Los Angeles, he is a writer and producer developing multiple TV projects including a satirical African-American drama (Mundo Loco films), co-creating a new series Fire City with celebrated author Carolyn Cooke, co-writing a Feminist TV series Here She Comes about two experimental sex coaches. He is also served as the head writer for the first of its kind Afrikaans drama/thriller Die Testament (2019) to be seen exclusively online at Netwerk 24. Previously Alex has written for numerous South African Television productions including head-writing seasons 3 and 4 of the SAFTA award-wining Umlilo (2015) , story-lining and writing for Doubt (2016), and story-lining for 90 Plein Street (2007) and Hard Copy (2005).
Alex is also an award-winning playwright with productions including The Cry of Winnie Mandela (2024 The Market Theatre, planned), Fees Must Fall (reading at Wits University, 2016), The Inkanyamba (The Market Theatre Laboratory, 2015) and Whose Blood (London's Old Operating Theatre, 2011).
In his other life, Alex is an International Development Specialist working for World Bank (2005-2010, 2014-2016) and most recently serving as a Vice President at AngloGold Ashanti, Africa's largest mining company (2011-2013).
Alex hails from Massachusetts, grew up performing in 1,200 performances of a resident magic troupe, volunteered with Mother Teresa in Calcutta India, and spent seven years fighting for racial justice in Alabama where he won the Spirit of Dr. King award (2002). Alex holds an MBA from INSEAD and a BA in the Comparative Study of Religion from Harvard University. He will be part of the Oxford Next Horizonz cohort sponsored by the Rhodes Trust in early 2024.
