- Many of his pictures were sold to Englishmen on their Grand Tour (traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class young men of means) via merchant Joseph Smith (later appointed British Consul in Venice in 1744). Smith sold much of his collection to King George III. Buckingham Palace today houses the largest collection of Canaletto's works.
- His mononym Canaletto ("little Canal") came from his last name, being the son of famed painter Bernardo Canal.
