The following contains spoilers for Lovecraft Country episode 8.
We meet young Emmett Till in episode three of Lovecraft Country, “Holy Ghost.” Till, referred to as “Bobo” and portrayed by Rhyan Hill, is seen using a Ouija board in Leti’s basement the night of her housewarming, alongside Diana (Jada Harris), and Gil. The kids take turns asking questions, which the board answers, and when Bobo asks if he’ll have a good time on his trip, the board says no. It’s a brief moment in the story, but the meaning becomes much deeper once you realize that it’s the summer of 1955 and the trip in question is his visit to Mississippi to visit relatives.
Emmett Till was a real person and he was 14 years old when he travelled to the Mississippi Delta in late summer to visit family. On Aug. 24, 1955, Till, his cousins, and some friends went to Bryant Grocery in Money,...

Marc Lawrence’s holiday-themed Santa Claus-centric family comedy “Noelle” was originally conceived of as a theatrical release for Disney — when it was known as “Nicole” — before changing course and debuting on the Mouse House’s fledgling streaming platform. Presumably, the theatrical version of “Noelle” would have boasted better CGI, a beefier storyline, and at least a handful more laughs, because the version hitting Disney+ on its very first day in existence is not at all up to theatrical snuff. Fundamentally good-hearted and with a charming Anna Kendrick on board as the eponymous character, “Noelle” may have a sweet holiday movie buried somewhere in its DNA, but the final version meant to tout the depth of the studio’s library is certainly not it.
Whatever missteps may have gone into “Noelle” — and there are many — at least Lawrence made off with a solid cast: Kendrick as Santa’s cheery daughter Noelle,...

Netflix has opted not to renew for a second season All About the Washingtons, its multi-camera comedy series starring Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons & Justine Simmons. The decision comes two months after the release of the series’ 10-episode first season, which didn’t seem to get a lot of traction.
Created by Jeremy Bronson (The Mayor), All About The Washingtons had a twisty road to the screen. The pitch originally landed at ABC in fall 2016 with a put pilot commitment. It did not get a pilot order, but, believing in the concept and the talent, producing companies Amblin TV and ABC Studios pulled together resources and used the penalty money to finance a pilot presentation. The presentation was well received by ABC brass but the broadcast network only picked up three new comedy series that year, including Bronson’s The Mayor, and got out of the multi-camera comedy business all together.
