Daniel G. Harmann
- Music Department
- Composer
Over the past 25 years, the Seattle-based musician, Daniel G. Harmann has released countless solo albums, cover projects, collaborative projects, been in bands, worked in music tech, and most recently dove headfirst into the world of scoring. The pursuit of music is not so much a career or a hobby or even simply a passion however. It's what gives him life.
He's created ambient music (Unspoken Ghosts), rock music (Risk), experimental music (collaborations with Mondo Loops, wltv, and Hush Child, etc.), hip-hop/R&B (Nico Santana and Archie Beatz), and even neo-classical/post-rock (collaborations with pianist Sam Miller), just to name a few. But what ties it all together for the songwriter and multi-instrumental musician is the pursuit of the next creative idea. "Music was always the thing I knew was going to be with me forever," he says.
Lately, what's been most intriguing to Harmann is the world of scoring. "It's all I want to do now," he says. "I feel like this is the next frontier for me." One particular scoring project Harmann says he's thrilled by is the forthcoming climate-change focused podcast, Sabotage, for which he's been commissioned as the lead composer. "It's been a really incredible experience and it's a foot in the door to that world," he says of Sabotage.
Originally from Arizona, and moving to Seattle at age 23, Harmann has released music at a steady clip over the previous few decades. Over the course of 25 years, his work is decidedly varied in sound and style. "I think a lot of that is just natural evolution," he offers of his multi-dimensional sound.
As for what's next for Harmann, he says he's going to do what he's always done - continue to create music.
"There's no end game for me," Harmann says in conclusion of his musical endeavors. "It's all about continuing to push it forward."
Most recently, Daniel has been deep in the ambient/instrumental genre - crafting sounds that are both at once cinematic and accessible.
In his years of writing, recording and touring, Daniel has honed his craft. He's recorded with well-respected producers and engineers such as Brandon Eggleston, (Modest Mouse, Mountain Goats, Les Savy Fav) Eric Corson, (The Long Winters) and Matthew Emerson Brown, (Trespassers William, Lucinda Williams, Black Night Crash). He's played shows with artists such as Minus the Bear, Phosphorescent, Low, Pela, Goodness, Firehose, Of Montreal, the Velvet Teen, Travis Morrison (the Dismemberment Plan), Spring Offensive, John Roderick (the Long Winters), Restorations, Rosie Thomas, Star Anna, the Divorce, Boat and many more.
