He went on to attend the University Michigan where he was named Two-time All-Big Ten Conference selection and played in 37 games with 25 starts. Funchess moved to wide receiver as a junior after playing tight end as a sophomore and freshman. He totaled 126 receptions for 1,715 yards and 15 touchdowns. Funchess was named Second-team All-Big Ten Conference choice as a junior in 2014. He led the Wolverines with 62 catches, 733 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. He went on to be named Big Ten Conference tight end of the year in 2013, Second-team All-Big Ten Conference selection and he set a school record for the most receiving yards in a season by a tight end with 748.
