- Yuzo Toyama is known for Saka no ue no kumo (2009). He died on July 11, 2023 in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.

- In addition to the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Toyama also conducted orchestras in Osaka, Nagoya and Sendai.
- Rostropovich performed the world premiere of the composer's six-movement 1967 First Cello Concerto, a piece described by Gramophone as "attractive", with the additional comment that it "sounds like Japanese folk music rendered orchestral by Kodaly".
