Ethan W. Kampa graduated with distinction, receiving a Bachelor of Music in Composition degree from Indiana University where he studied under Dr. Jorge Muñiz. During his studies, he received the Music Talent Scholarship for compositional excellence. He finished his final Fall 2011 semester at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Principado de Asturias (CONSMUPA) in Oviedo, Spain, where he studied composition with Fernando López Blanco and counterpoint (fugue) with Fernando Agüeria Cueva. He has composed works for solo, chamber, choral and orchestral ensembles, of which have been performed in the US and in Europe. Ethan was awarded a commission to compose a new work for the Virginia Morrow Scholarship Recital in 2010. In 2013, Ethan was accepted to participate in the Atlantic Music Festival in Waterville, Maine where his chamber work, Ex unum, had its world premiere. His debut album, At Last, which explores popular musical idioms and sounds in symphonic form, was released in December of 2014. In addition to academic (classical) music, Ethan is also a writer of alternative, electronic, folk, and film music. Ethan has scored a number of short films and recently, was orchestrator, music preparation, and assistant to composer, Hanan Townshend on the IMAX documentary, Voyage of Time, written and directed by Terrence Malick.
Ethan composed his first piece for solo piano at the age of 9 in rural Minnesota. Since then, he has grown in his passion for the craft of composition; continually pursuing his voice. Ethan grew up listening to classical, pop, and rock music and watching classic films. In light of those deep influences, Ethan's passion is to utilize his prowess of academic technique combined with a strong sense of narrative, lyricism, and identifiable melody, to create an accessible yet challenging sonic experience.
