Touted as one of the favorites on paper, the USA's supposed star-studded lineup to play at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals next week will face a wholesome of changes.
After their top two ranked Wta players - Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula - didn't sign up for the event, they were left short in depth. But the expectation was that Madison Keys would step up to fill the void after a fine season locked her Top 20 spot in the rankings.
But Keys appears to have bowed down to fatigue and exhaustion, having played at the Wta Elite Trophy this past week. She looked like a player in dear need of a holiday, losing both of her group matches and being eliminated. In fact, her end to the season has been dismal, losing four matches in a row.
Rather than risk her compatriots' campaign by operating at less than 100%, Keys...

Former Wta No. 1 Simona Halep has officially been dropped from the upcoming US Open and is set to lose her ranking status in three weeks' time.
At the start of this year's US swing, the Romanian star was ranked in the world's Top 60. But she'll drop the 1,000 ranking points that kept her ranking afloat in the world's Top 60 as most of the points she accrued in the second half of last season are chalked off.
Halep dropped points in Washington (30), Canadian Open (900), and Cincinnati (60), which add up to 990 points. Since she participated at last year's US Open, where she lost in the opening round, she'll now lose 10 points with her absence now confirmed .
That means Halep's points tally will hit the zero mark as she was not capable of defending her points all season, and most importantly in the last phase of the season where a huge chunk of her...

Simona Halep won't be playing at the 2023 US Open as she was automatically withdrawn from the event as a suspended player.
It's coming up to exactly one year since Simona Halep last stood on a tennis court. It was August 29th, 2022, when last played, and it was a round-one match against Daria Snigur at the US Open. She shockingly lost that match in three sets, but an even bigger shock was incoming.
Halep provided samples after that match, samples that ultimately were positive for a banned substance, and she was provisionally banned from the sport. It was a shock to Halep and all those who knew her , considering how seriously she takes her career.
Fast forward to a year later, Halep was automatically withdrawn from the event as she was still provisionally suspended. It's been a whole year with no resolution for Halep as she tries to clear her name and save her legacy.

Taylor Townsend showed her big heart when he comforted Leylah Fernandez after losing in the 2023 Roland Garros doubles final.
As the last ball was hit, and the umpire announced the result of the 2023 Roland Garros Wta doubles final match in favor of Su-Wei Hsieh and Xinyu Wang, the celebrations started on Court Philippe Chatrier.
However, on the other side of the court, Leylah Fernandez was really disappointed after losing her maiden Grand Slam doubles final as the duo fell short in a tight three-set battle, losing 6-1, 6-7(5), 1-6.
Despite the scoreline, the story of this final stretched beyond the boundaries of statistics, game, set, and match. Instead, it was a story of camaraderie, empathy, and the human spirit personified through the comforting embrace of Townsend to a visibly disappointed Fernandez.
With previous experiences of Grand Slam finals each, Townsend and Fernandez were no strangers to the intense pressure that these events command.

Paris, June 9 (Ians) The No.10 seeds Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend needed just 64 minutes to book their place in the first Grand Slam final together, defeating No.2 seeds Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula 6-0, 6-4 in the women’s doubles semifinals at the French Open, here on Friday.
With this, Townsend advanced to her second major final, having been runner-up alongside Caty McNally at last year’s US Open to Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.
For Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up in singles, the result marked her first Grand Slam final in doubles. They will face either No.6 seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez or the unseeded Hsieh Su-Wei and Wang Xinyu for the title.
The Canadian-American duo first teamed up at Indian Wells in March, and their record together now stands at 14-4. The defeat of Gauff and Pegula reverses the result of the Miami final, which the all-American...

Coco Gauff and, especially, Jessica Pegula have been denied a chance to become the highest-ranked doubles players on the Wta Tour at the 2023 Roland Garros .
After an early loss of the top-seeded team at the 2023 Roland Garros, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, the American duo had a chance to do something they were far from for quite some time.
Last year in August, Gauff reached the world no. 1 spot in doubles , with her doubles partner Pegula, being logically right behind her. There were a few events that the two didn't play together and thanks to that, the teenager had more points at the time.
However, the tables turned and currently, Pegula leads Gauff by 90 points. That meant that if the duo won the 2023 Roland Garros, the 29-year-old would reach her new career-high and for the first time become the doubles world no. 1.
But fellow American Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez from Canada had different plans.

Paris, May 28 (Ians) Unseeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic caused the first upset in the women’s singles draw by beating eighth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece in the first round even as top contenders Aryna Sabalenka and Stefanos Tsitsipas negotiated their first round challenges in contrasting styles at the French Open on Sunday.
While Muchova got the better of Sakkari, women’s No.2 seed Sabalenka got her Roland Garros campaign off to a winning start, coming from an early break down to defeat Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 11 minutes.
In the men’s singles first round, Sakkari’s compatriot Tsitsipas passed a stern first-round test on Sunday at Roland Garros, where the fifth seed overcame Jiri Vesely 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(7) at the clay-court major.

Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez are set to meet in an exhibition match at the 2023 Atlanta Open.
The event in Atlanta is an Atp tournament, but now already traditionally, it holds one Wta match for the fans prior to the event. Last year, Gauff and Fernandez were set to meet in that match, called the Sunday Showdown, but the Canadian was forced to withdraw from it because of an injury.
Taylor Townsend replaced the 2021 US Open finalist and it was an all-American match in Atlanta, which ended better for the teenager who beat the more experienced opponent, and she then took on Sofia Kenin in another exhibition match, winning that too when a ball boy helped her to win a match point.
Now, Gauff and Fernandez will give it a try as they are set to meet in the Sunday Showdown again. This time, the event should be held on July 23rd,...

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will be playing in the 2023 Madrid Open final after another solid performance.
Both Americans are already out of the singles competitions, but they are still competing in Madrid as they are very close to a doubles title. Gauff and Pegula are playing doubles together for quite some time already and it's not a new situation for them to play doubles also after singles exit at a Wta event.
In Madrid, Gauff was the first player eliminated from the two, losing to Paula Badosa in the third round. A couple of rounds later, also Pegula lost as she was bested by Veronika Kudermetova in the quarterfinals.
But the two successfully moved past the quarterfinals stages in the doubles to set up a semifinal meeting with Marta Kostyuk and Elena-Gabriela Ruse. The two teams never met before, so it was their first clash and it was already...

The match – in which Osaka prevailed 6-3, 6-0 – peaked in its final quarter hour, 8:15-30 p.m. Et, at a 2.3 rating. The 2019 U.S. Open coverage on ESPN has grown in the ratings compared with last year on each of its first four days, the network said Friday. And that’s before Saturday’s primetime showdown in the year’s final tennis Grand Slam tournament featuring 15-year-old U.S. phenom Coco Gauff against defending champ (and 21-year-old) Naomi Osaka of Japan.
ESPN reported that viewership through Thursday’s two rounds, dominated by storylines in the women’s draw, has averaged 691,000, up 26% over last year, with each window outperforming the comparative one in 2018. That peaked last night with ESPN2’s coverage of Gauff’s three-set victory over Timea Babos to reach the third round of the New York-set tournament.
Viewership for the match peaked at 2.16 million late in the match, which Gauff pulled out in front of 14,000 at the main Louis Armstrong Stadium. She became the youngest female to advance this far...
