This weekend, Ramy Youssef became the first Egyptian named Ramy from New Jersey to ever host Saturday Night Live, and one of the night’s highlight sketches took aim at a beloved cultural mainstay: NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts.
The sketch featured Youssef as the leader of a band that gets to “quirk it up” on Tiny Desk, even having their cellist (Chloe Troast) playing a milk carton as a shaker for the occasion. As they begin performing, though, they are interrupted by Bowen Yang (playing a 35-year-old intern who attends “Suny Newark”), who asks them to “keep the ruckus down” because “some of us are working.”
The band, confused that their booking to play Bob Boilen’s iconic desk at the NPR office has gone awry, tries to continue, but is again interrupted by Yang’s character (who is on an “important Zoom” with “Glass and Gross” in the...

Alvvays stopped by the NPR office for their long-awaited Tiny Desk Concert, performing just a handful of highlights off their still-fantastic 2022 album Blue Rev.
Even if you’ve only heard just one Alvvays song, it’s easy to tell that the band’s studio recordings and live performances both usually implement some really heavy reverb and other vocal effects. But their concert at the Tiny Desk — where such embellishments are usually frowned upon — proves that although those stylistic choices do sound nice, vocalist Molly Rankin certainly doesn’t need to hide any flaws.
The recent first-time Grammy nominees opened their four-song set with an impossibly massive rendition of “Belinda Says,” before Rankin gave some words of gratitude (and a subtle apology): “We’ve not worked up the courage to do this until today,” she said with a nervous giggle.
That lack of courage was undetectable as Alvvays ripped through “Pressed,...

Tomorrow X Together recently performed a Tiny Desk Concert as part of NPR and LG U+’s ongoing Tiny Desk Korea series.
Our May cover stars, Txt — Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai — took over Tiny Desk Korea’s filming location, which looks a bit more like a library than Bob Boilen’s work station. But the wall of bibliophile-friendly bookcases acts as a fitting backdrop for Txt, who performed three tracks from their recent album The Name Chapter: Freefall.
Though Txt are more known for their larger-than-life performances like many of their K-pop contemporaries, their Tiny Desk gig saw “Skipping Stones,” “Happily Ever After,” and “Chasing That Feeling” transformed from arena-sized bangers into moody and even jazzy numbers. Opting to sit instead of busting out their choreography, Txt proved that K-pop doesn’t always have to be a full-blown spectacle — it can simply exist as just damn good pop music.

Bob Boilen, the founder of NPR’s All Songs Considered and the popular Tiny Desk Concert series, has announced his retirement from the organization after over three decades.
“After 35 years, I am leaving NPR,” Boilen tweeted. “I’ve had the thrill of creating Tiny Desk Concerts, All Songs Considered, directing All Things Considered for 18 years and so much more. I love the people I’ve worked with, but it’s time to find new challenges. thank you for listening/watching.”
According to NPR journalist Lars Gotrich, Boilen’s last day will be October 2nd. Boilen — who served as director for All Things Considered, NPR’s premier news program, from 1989 to 2007 — started All Songs Considered, its online music show, in 2000. The program was inspired by the musical “buttons” Boilen, a lifelong musician, played in between segments on the news show.

Dave Grohl talks about the impact of Washington D.C. hardcore legends Scream in a new bonus clip from the forthcoming home and video on-demand release of the documentary, Punk the Capital.
The film dives deep into the punk and hardcore scene that emerged and flourished in Washington D.C. between 1976 and 1983. Scream, who formed in 1981, were one of the most pivotal acts and their debut album, Still Screaming, was the first full-length LP released on Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson’s seminal Dischord Records.

Miley Cyrus just made herself at home—a tiny home that is. On Jan. 28, the artist appeared on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Series, but instead of performing from NPR host Bob Boilen's desk in Washington D.C., she rocked out in a tiny version of her bedroom. The singer—who rocked sunglasses, a black cowboy hat and faux fur coat—began her performance with a rendition of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You," before going into two songs off her latest album Plastic Hearts. Miley strips down her tracks "Golden G String" and "Prisoner" and performs the tracks with a grunge era edge that feels worlds away from her time as pop star...

BTS is bringing the house—or should we say tiny desk—down. As pop culture fans know, the coronavirus pandemic has prevented musicians and groups from performing as much as they used to. But on Sept. 21, NPR surprised fans with a Tiny Desk home concert featuring the K-Pop group. Instead of traveling to Bob Boilen's office desk in Washington D.C., Jun, Suga, J-Hope, Rm, Jimin, V and Jungkook appeared at the record store Vinyl & Plastic in Seoul to perform three songs. The group opened with their summer hit "Dynamite" before throwing it back to more fan-favorites including "Save Me" and "Spring Day." In six hours, the concert has already been viewed more...

NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series is one of the true joys of the Internet, an intimate performance that takes place at Bob Boilen's… well, tiny desk. And each year, the station holds a competition to get one lucky unsigned artist a spot at the desk. This year, the winner is Minnesota fiddler and singer Gaelynn Lea, and it's easy to hear why. Lea, a 32-year-old classically trained fiddler, lives in Duluth, Minnesota, and is influenced by Celtic and Appalachian music. Born with a congenital disability called brittle bone disease, Lea's forced to hold her fiddle parallel to her body...

Read our picks below, share yours in the comments, and subscribe to the Vulture 2015 Playlist for a comprehensive guide to the year's best new tunes.Beach House, “Sparks” In a recent interview with NPR, Victoria Legrand stumbles when Bob Boilen asks her to clarify a few lyrics he can't quite understand. It's puzzling, she said, to be reminded of the fact that people still listen to lyrics carefully and interpret songs. But for all of its gauzy, dream-pop bliss, Beach House is still the kind of band that deserves a close listen. Fight the temptation to get lost in Legrand's dulcet voice and give this new song from the band's upcoming record, their first since 2012's Bloom,...
