Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are in talks to return for a sequel to the 1998 classic Practical Magic.
Akiva Goldsman, one of the writers behind the original, will pen the screenplay. Plot details are not yet known. Bullock and Kidman are expected to produce alongside Denise Di Novi, who produced the original.
Practical Magic starred Kidman and Bullock as two orphaned sisters who come from a long line of witches. Raised by their eccentric aunts in a prejudiced Massachusetts town, they had to contend with a curse that kept them from never finding love.
At the time of release, the movie received generally negative reviews and failed to make a mark at the box office, but it has achieved cult status among audiences. Since the film’s release, Kidman and Bullock have also become the two biggest stars in Hollywood with awards recognition and box office acclaim.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock learned their mystic practice from The Rules of Magic.
Being normal is not necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage. Not at HBO Max, however. The not-yet-launched streaming service is making its own laws. The streamer will produce a series adaptation of Alice Hoffman’s novel The Rules of Magic, which is a prequel to Practical Magic, according to Variety. The 1998 film starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sorceress sisters on different paths. It was directed by Griffin Dunne.
HBO Max ordered a pilot for a one-hour show called which will center on siblings Jet, Franny, and Vincent Owens who have been kept isolated because of their abnormalities. They soon learn they are actually descended from a line of witches. The setting of Rules of Magic will move from Massachusetts to 1960s New York City. The sisters inspire fear rather than love.

HBO Max has released info on three new series that they are using to build up their streaming service selection. All three new series are from Warner Bros. TV. The first in the lineup is Rules of Magic, based on the book that is the prequel to the book and 1998 film Practical Magic. The series is being created by Melissa Rosenberg (Jessica Jones). Variety reports the following synopsis for the series:
Set in 1960s New York City, the series follows three troubled siblings — Franny, Jet and Vincent Owens — who wrestle with “abnormalities” that have kept them isolated. But the tumultuous times unearth the extraordinary discovery that they are, in fact, descendants of a bloodline of witches. The two sisters will become the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in “Practical Magic,” while their brother will leave an unexpected legacy.
Next up is the series Generation, which was created by 17 year old Zelda Barnz,...

HBO Max has added some more projects to its development slate.
One of which is a prequel to Practical Magic, per Deadline.
Melissa Rosenberg (Jessica Jones) will executive produce and write Rules of Magic, an “epic, generational family drama set in 1960s New York City” that follows three siblings named Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens who find themselves facing "abnormalities" that have kept them apart from each other.

The trio is forced to deal with grief, war, bigotry, and dark magic alongside a crazy curse that forces to keep them away from the path of love.
It's certainly an interesting hook for a series, and it's not difficult to draw similarities to Charmed (both the WB version and The CW's reboot).
Alice Hoffman wrote the Practical Magic novel that went on to be adapted to the 1998 movie of the same name which starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
