- He created the Rock Garden of Chandigarh, a 25-acre site in northern India that contains more than 2,000 statues. He used broken crockery, iron foundry discards, fluorescent tubes, bicycle frames, bottles, shells, cooking pots, and smashed bathroom fittings to create his landscape.
- He was a roads inspector as part of Le Corbusier's huge construction project of Chandigarh, the new capital of the half of Punjab remaining in independent India after the partition in 1947.
- His work appeared on a postage stamp in 1982. He received a Padma Shri award in 1984 from the Indian government for his contribution to the arts.
