- He is the father of the German actress Johanna von Koczian.
- He attended five classes at the high school in Brno and then graduated from the artillery cadet school in Vienna.
- On November 20, 1919, Koczian married the silent film actress Ossi Oswalda. In 1921 his wife founded a production company and he became its managing director. In 1925 Oswalda signed with UFA. In the fall of 1935, Gustav traveled to New York and their marriage ended in divorce.

She worked as an actress and later as a screenwriter under the name Elsie Fuller. They lived in Los Angeles. Gustav worked as a producer at Paramount. In October 1932 his wife filed for divorce.
