London, June 5 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Atherton feels left-arm spin all-rounder Liam Dawson can be a like-for-like replacement for injured Jack Leach, after he suffered a lower-back stress fracture, thus ruling him out of the upcoming Ashes series against Australia.
Leach developed lower-back stress fracture symptoms during England’s ten-wicket victory over Ireland in their one-off Test at the Lord’s last week, where the left-arm spinner took four wickets and scans on Sunday revealed the fracture, which will keep him out of five-match Ashes series starting from June 16 at Edgbaston.
Leach had established himself as England’s main spinner under Ben Stokes’ captaincy and was the only specialist spinner named in the 16-man squad for the first two Tests. His absence is a huge blow to England, who now have only 11 days in hand to decide on his replacement for the Ashes.

Dubai Jan 24 (Ians) Medium pacer Naveen-ul-Haq’s deadly spell of 5 for 38 wrecked table-toppers Gulf Giants’ batting to help Sharjah Warriors record a stunning 21 runs victory in Match 14 of the Dp World ILT20 at the Dubai International Stadium on Monday night.
Naveen-ul-Haq was backed by Chris Woakes (2-11) and Junaid Siddiqui (2-18) as they bowled with clinical accuracy and bundle out Gulf Giants for 130 in 19.4 overs
Sharjah had posted only a modest total of 151/7 in 20 overs. They came into this match defeating Dubai Capitals and thus recorded their second win while Gulf Giants’ four-match winning streak came to an end.
It was surprising that despite the heavy rains till one hour before the start, the match could commence on time. It was mainly due to Dubai International Stadium’s superb drainage system. The result of the match was even more surprising. For Sharjah Warriors Joe Denly top scored with 58 runs off...

Dubai, Jan 17 (Ians) UAE players Muhammad Waseem and Sanchit Sharma set the stage on fire with their exceptional outings in the opening weekend of the Dp World International League T20, being held on their home grounds.
Mi Emirates’ Waseem played a whirlwind knock of 71 runs, from 39 balls, against Sharjah Warriors on Saturday, while Gulf Giants’ Sharma rattled the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders’ top-order with figures of 3 wickets for 9 runs on Sunday, both performances earned both the ‘Player of the Match’ award for their respective matches.
Sharma, who dismissed Colin Ingram, Brandon King and Connor Esterhuizen, was also on a hat-trick at one of point in the game. “This is a dream debut for me. I couldn’t have started my franchise cricket career in a better way. I visualised how my team and I would play and the reality was similar to my visualisation. I was disappointed about missing the hat-trick.

Adelaide, Nov 17 (Ians) Dawid Malan’s fantastic century went in vain as Australia’s top-order batters produced impressive performances to help their team beat England by six wickets in the first Odi and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, here on Thursday.
Malan’s ton (134 off 128) injected life into England’s innings and helped them post 287/9 in 50 overs. In reply, David Warner (86 off 84), Travis Head (69 off 57) and Steve Smith (80 not out off 78) hit enterprising fifties to help the hosts chase down the total in 46.5 overs with six wickets in hand.
In the absence of the now-retired Odi skipper Aaron Finch, Australia’s new opening pair of Warner and Head blasted a century stand from 88 balls to set up their pursuit of 288. Warner brought up a 44-ball fifty whereas Head reached that landmark off 46 balls.
England finally managed a breakthrough in the 20th over when Head hit Jordan straight...

Karachi, Sep 26 (Ians) England head coach Matthew Mott praised left-arm spin all-rounder Liam Dawson’s fighting cameo of 34, terming it “special” despite facing a narrow three-run defeat to Pakistan in the fourth T20I at the National Stadium.
In the chase of 167, England needed 33 off the last three overs with three wickets in hand. Dawson got England ahead in the match as he smashed Mohammad Hasnain for a six and four straight fours to take 24 runs off the 18th over. He then took another boundary off Haris Rauf in the penultimate over to get the equation down to five runs off just ten balls.
But on the very next ball, Dawson tried to pull a fiery short ball, which went straight to mid-wicket fielder, ending his cameo at 34 off just 17 balls coming at a strike-rate of 200. It was a superlative effort from Dawson, who had a previous top score of 10 in T20Is.

Karachi, Sep 26 (Ians) Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan made 88 while Haris Rauf had an exceptional time in the death overs as Pakistan sealed a dramatic three-run win over England in the fourth T20I at the National Stadium to level the seven-match series 2-2.
After Rizwan’s 88 off 67 balls, laced with nine fours and a six, helped Pakistan post 166/5, a total which looked below-par at half-way stage of the match, England’s left-arm spin all-rounder Liam Dawson had put England on the doorstep of victory.
Dawson’s 34 off just 17 balls, including five successive boundaries in the 18th over against Mohammad Hasnain, left the visitors needing five runs to win off the last 10 balls, with three wickets in hand.
But Rauf brought Pakistan back into the match as Dawson gave a top-edge on pulling a fiery short ball and ended up holing out to mid-wicket.
On the very next ball, Rauf (3/32) castled debutant...
