Picked 38th overall by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, Musil defected in July 1986 by obtaining a holiday visa to Yugoslavia, then an America work visa provided by then-North Stars GM
Lou Nanne. Although Musil left his girlfriend, 1985 Junior Wimbledon champion Andrea Holikova, at their hotel without telling her of his plans, she later defected and joined him in Minnesota. Their son, David, was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2nd round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
