The former 007’s new commercial seems designed to show the world he’s a fun guy now. But Mr Intensity has always had a gift for comedy
If you have seen the new Taika Waititi-directed commercial for Belvedere Vodka, you will have almost certainly been struck by one profound, core-shaking question; is Daniel Craig actually having fun?
It certainly looks that way, doesn’t it? Although it begins as you would expect anything starring Daniel Craig to begin – there’s brooding, there’s black and white, there’s a tuxedo – it quickly bursts into life. Suddenly he’s in a leather jacket and sunglasses, sucking in his cheeks like Bet Lynch at the Rovers. He struts. He spins. He thrusts his crotch around with total impunity. He’s like Christopher Walken in the Weapon of Choice video, if Christopher Walken had been dressed like a member of Bros.

This one was only an hour! But Simon ‘n’ Friends still managed to serve up a hearty helping of drain-circling matter along with one, maybe two promising singers. Ashly Williams, 24, delivered the only truly stirring audition of the night — even if the producers hadn’t launched into an edited segment about her murdered mother (we are really to believe Simon didn’t know and had to beg her to mention something “interesting” about herself? this is such pure trash! dying! help! it hurts!), I would have enjoyed the way she vocally purred and throbbed her way through Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.

I’m a big fan of recycling — even with all the accompanying shame from the clanking of sauv blanc bottles down four flights of stairs every Thursday night — but in the case of The X Factor‘s third season, we may have reached a tipping point.
Pretty much every element of the show — save for Kelly Rowland’s refreshing mix of candor and sass — has the tired scent of “been there, done that”: The cocky hot guy who can’t really sing. Simon Cowell’s predictably dramatic “You don’t have four yesses…you have 4,301 yesses.” Paulina Rubio’s...

For a pair of contestants on The X Factor, it will be the Thanksgiving they never forget. No American Idol-like reprieve here: on Wednesday, host Mario Lopez announced that two would be leaving the competition on Thanksgiving, and he wasn’t just talking TV. Is it because the Brits don’t have a full appreciation of our fair holiday? More likely, it’s as simple as this: the right people went home. Arin Ray, an alumnus of season one’s InTENsity, never quite found his footing among season two’s final 12, though he had a promising start in the top 16. As for

Two more acts have been eliminated from The X Factor USA. Arin Ray and Beatrice Miller said their goodbyes on Thursday night's (November 22) results show, following the week's Thanksgiving-themed performances. Former InTENsity singer Ray finished bottom of the public vote and was immediately eliminated, while Miller and CeCe Frey entered the sing-off. Frey performed Kelly Clarkson's 'Because of You', while a tearful Miller - who had been struggling with a heavy cold which affected her vocal quality - sung Dido's 'White Flag'. Simon Cowell made the casting vote, saying that he was concerned the experience was proving to be "too much" for Miller, and that he was sending her home, saying: "I don't think this is the right time for you now... I'm going to send you home." Miller's (more)...

Welcome to The X Factor, sponsored by Aleve — the long-acting analgesic with the power to ward off gale-force migraines caused by the pack of perpetually screeching harpies sitting in the first three rows of the audience.
It doesn’t matter what the Top 13 are singing. It doesn’t matter how the judges are reacting. It doesn’t matter if Demi Lovato can’t pronounce the names of the singers she’s mentoring. And it doesn’t even matter whether the producers fill Mario Lopez’s teleprompter with the script from Ken Burns’ Jazz or an announcement that a meteor is...

You know there’s something seriously wrong in the world — or at least on your TV screen — when a 13-year-old boy is looking into the camera and, without the slightest hint of irony or humor, declares “this is the climax of my life.” Hello, and welcome to The X Factor.
I’m still not sure why there was no “TV: Msp” warning in the upper left side of my screen — that’s short for “Middle-Schooler, Please!” — but Fox’s second-string reality singing competition isn’t really to blame. Sure, judge L.A. Reid continued to perpetrate the myth tonight that life...

A number of crimes involving the male torso went down on Thursday night’s installment of The X Factor. Simon Cowell rocked a neckline that plunged dangerously close to his netherregions. A member of boy band Emblem3 wore suspenders — without a shirt! (I’ll pause for a moment while you fight back the acrid taste of bile). And oh the sounds that got caught and killed in the chests of fresh-faced Willie Jones and wheelchair-bound Freddie Combs! (We’ll just assume the former’s were low and rumbly, in a bebeh-lock-them-dawwrs kinda way, and the latter’s were tremulous and overbaked.

Wednesday night’s X Factor ended with the image of a 13-year-old boy collapsed in a heap in his mother’s lap, a flurry of producers and medics trying to figure out if he’d live or if he’d eventually die of embarrassment at the hands of Simon Cowell.
I’m not sure if the incident was a clever indictment of the lengths today’s youth will go to for a chance at fame, or just a happy (medical) accident that the show’s producers cynically used to fill out yet another two-hour audition episode. Maybe it was both.
