Variety’s 2019 Entertainment Marketing Summit, which brought top execs to Hollywood’s NeueHouse on Thursday, covered considerable ground. From cutting through the noise in an oversaturated media landscape to welcoming exciting technology like virtual reality, industry veterans offered insight into what to expect from the marketing world in coming years.
Here are 10 things we learned from this year’s Entertainment Marketing Summit presented by Deloitte.
Facebook’s new privacy features will give consumers more control over advertisements
Facebook’s plans to implement a “clear history” feature, which will allow its 2.32 billion monthly users to erase their digital footprint, has raised questions over how such a blockade from data-collecting will affect the media giant’s ad revenue. But Jennifer Howard, the group director for entertainment, technology, and connectivity at Facebook, doesn’t think this potential lack of data will necessarily decrease revenue made from ads. “Browsing history is really only a...

Netflix’s ability to profit from its secret sauce of granular consumer data has made it the envy of Hollywood. Now, with Disney, Warner Media and others prepping their own ambitious services to challenge the streaming insurgents, entertainment marketers will face more competitive pressures than ever. But at the same time, new marketing tools are emerging that will help them challenge the competition.
This is the brave new world that will be examined at Variety’s Entertainment Marketing Summit presented by Deloitte, which takes place at Neuehouse Hollywood on Match 21. It’s a world where marketers plumb data from consumer interaction with content, buzz from social media, past purchases and other online activities for insights to help them craft campaigns and build brands.
It’s not an easy task. “Data is critical but data can be overwhelming,” says summit speaker Shabnam Mogharabi, who is co-founder and general manager of digital entertainment shop SoulPancake.

SoulPancake, the digital brand devoted to inspirational content that aims to make a difference in its viewers' lives, is rebooting one of its flagship series and most synonymous personalities: Kid President.

The Kid President series is being rebooted as Kid Congress, she said -- and while the forthcoming series will presumably include additional characters, it’s unclear what format it will take.
Kid President, portrayed by teen star Robby Novak and based on a character created by his brother-in-law, Brad Montague, was active on Soul Pancake’s digital channels between 2012 and 2016, and perhaps best known for his adorable pep talks and inspirational missives. At the height of his career,...
