Exclusive: Ghana’s fast-developing film sector has received a significant vote of confidence from the country’s government as President Nana Akufo-Addo sets plans to introduce a new tax rebate system for film productions.
As part of the new law, the country will offer a 20% tax rebate for strategic film productions alongside a series of film financing reliefs, including exemptions on import duties for film production equipment. The proposed incentives also include an exemption on port taxes and other cash levies, which are usually required upfront by authorities. The government has said local corporate entities that financially back the sector can also benefit from these incentives.

According to Deadline, Idris Elba is set to pull triple duty on Infernus. In addition to starring in the action thriller, Elba will also produce and direct the project for Millennium Media.
Idris Elba will star in Infernus as Donovan Kamara, “a U.N. human rights activist sent to investigate reports of refugees being illegally detained inside a U.S. black site prison. A seemingly simple task turns deadly when the world’s most dangerous inmates break free. Fremantle and De Maio Entertainment have signed a partnership with Afua Hirsch’s U.K. based production company Born In Me for an exclusive global first look deal.
The agreement will give Fremantle, in collaboration with De Maio Entertainment, the rights to co-develop, produce, and distribute, scripted and unscripted television and film projects with Born In Me.
The first project in development is a TV drama series based on the true story of Kweku Adoboli, the Ghana-born former investment banker who was jailed in 2012 after unauthorised losses of $2 billion in what is now known as the 2011 rogue trader scandal. The drama will interweave the complexities of being a Black man working in London, becoming criminalized, and battling deportation to a country that he left when he was only four years old. The series will be produced by Hirsch for Born In Me and Tony Tagoe and Danny Damah for Td Afrique Films.
