Acting is the art form of becoming someone else. Typically, it involves being on a set or location that helps an actor acclimate to their surroundings. But what if your surroundings are a recording studio, and the only thing you have to play off of is a microphone in front of you? Voice actors need to adapt to losing a handful of tools that thespians typically rely on.
Forbes aptly called voiceover work a "magical, almost invisible act." Voice actors cannot rely on facial expressions or physical movements to emphasize emotion. They are 100% reliant on their voice to convey to audiences what a character is feeling. The focus on speed, pitch, volume, inflection, accent, and other voice tools to bring a character to life within a sound studio can easily interfere with an actor's typical artistic process.

This post contains spoilers for the season 6 premiere of "Rick and Morty."
"Rick and Morty" stands at a curious place when it comes to animated sitcoms. As a comedy, the show has always known how to deliver hilarious standalone episodes, a craft that's been slowly lost to time in the age of streaming. From "Pickle Rick" to "Total Rickall" to "The Vat of Acid Episode," there are episodes you can easily watch over and over again on their own and they continue to hold up. These stories focus on a simple sci-fi premise and exploit them for every laugh they're worth.
But every once in a while, the series drops a bit of lore, a key backstory reveal that makes its world feel larger and lived-in. Whether it's the history of the Council of Ricks or the story of Rick's adventures with his alien friends fighting against the Federation, "Rick and Morty...

Rick and Morty showrunner Dan Harmon has called the global pandemic a “net zero” on his productivity during a virtual PaleyFest New York panel released Friday. The Emmy-winning writer and co-creator of Adult Swim’s animated juggernaut remarked that the isolating effects of the pandemic has led to some interesting changes to his staff’s workflow.
“It’s all about the removal of humanity, the forced compartmentalization. That’s good creatively for writers who are less socialized for loudness and interruption. There are some fellas that might not be heard when the whole fratty energy is at a full volume. I think in a lot of ways [it’s] a huge improvement and in a lot of ways rolling a boulder up a hill. It comes out to a net balance,” said Harmon.
Joining Harmon on the panel were Chris Parnell (Jerry Smith), Sarah Chalke (Beth Smith) and Spencer Grammer (Summer Smith...

Ouch! Ahhhh!! This is probably one of the scariest short films you'll ever see. Because it's so frickin' Real! Hangnail is a three-minute horror short made by Canadian filmmaker Colin MacDonald and his partner Nicole Barron, who stars in this as well. The short was produced by MacDonald and Barron in a single night during quarantine in the couple's Nova Scotia home. Horror film journalist/composer Jerry Smith then came on board to provide an original synthesizer score. It's a truly frightening horror short about those pesky hangnails. "That painful chunk of tissue that won’t let go. You rip and tear at it, but the flesh holds on." There is no way anyone can watch this short without shrieking in horror. Ahaha. Horror filmmakers always come up with some of the most creative and painful ideas for under-five-minutes short films. Enjoy. Thanks to Simply Legendary for the tip. Synopsis...
