- He had no intention to be a professional fighter until a late night altercation outside a nightclub in Auckland changed the course of his life. The brawl did not last long. Sam Marsters, one of the bouncers at the door was impressed by the young man's knockout power and invited him to his gym to take up formal training.
- Had a successful career as a Kickboxer in K-1. Eventually won the K-1 World Grand Prix 2001 championship. Since 2004 he also began a Mixed Martial Arts career under Pride, Dream and now under the UFC.
