Chris Almvig
Forty years in the field of social work with a Master's degree in
Gerontological Services Administration from the New School For Social
Research in NYC, Chris was one of the founders of SAGE-NYC (1977), the
first social services agency to address the needs of older LGBT people.
Chris also founded MATRIX, a non-profit that was to serve as a
retirement, retreat center for older lesbians. Although MATRIX did not
survive the 1980's, the concept has flourished and LGBT retirement
centers are appearing across the U.S. Chris was honored with the
NOW-National Organization For Women's, "Susan B. Anthony Award" for
founding SAGE. Her research "The Invisible Minority: Aging &
Lesbianism" (1982), was one of the first research projects to focus on
the lives of older lesbians.
