The catalog acquisition frenzy in the music industry continues to accelerate. Right now, the gorillas in this jungle include Larry Mestel’s Primary Wave and Merck Mercuriadis’s Hipgnosis Songs Fund, two investment and management firms: in 2021 alone the latter company has acquired copyrights and/or income streams from Neil Young, Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, Shakira, and Jimmy Iovine.
These big-spending upstarts — snapping up famous catalogs off the bet that they can make piles of cash off sync licensing and various royalty streams — have gotten the industry’s traditional “majors” on the hop.

Earlier this year, word spread through the music industry: The star K-Pop group Bts was on the hunt, prowling for a new single. “It was a bit of a holy grail cut,” says the English writer-producer David Stewart. “I had quite a few conversations with big producers and writers in America who were trying to get it.”
Stewart ended up winning the Bts lottery along with Jessica Agombar: The pair penned “Dynamite,” the K-Pop septet’s first all-English-language single. The lite-funk track, complete with scrubbing rhythm guitar and stabbing horns,...

The Midem conference, held in Cannes, France on June 5 through 8, gathered several thousand international music professionals for four days of panel discussions on many of the issues facing the industry today. Delegations from as far away as Africa and China attended with an eye (and ear) to reach key decision makers from record labels, publishing companies and live music executives. Artists showcased as well, with nightly concerts dedicated to music from Taiwan, China and the African continent. Between the croissants, these were some of the hot topics Midem attendees were talking about.
A Publishing Bubble?
With the recent acquisition of Emi Music Publishing by Sony/Atv, and Wall Street looking at publishing assets as a growth area ripe for investment, is the current climate actually a bubble? As one of the co-writers of Avicii’s hit song, “Wake Me Up,” Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger knew the Swedish DJ (real name: Tim Bergling), who died Friday of undisclosed causes at just 28, very well. Einziger says there are several unreleased songs they wrote together “I am hoping someday people will get to hear because, to me, they are some of my favorite pieces that I’ve ever written.” Einziger — pictured left above in 2013 with Avicii and Chic cofounder Nile Rodgers — spoke with Variety over the weekend and emotionally recalled his friendship with Berglinger and their work together.
I met Tim in 2012. We had friends in common, specifically [Avicii’s A&R rep] Neil Jacobson, who was helping him decide on musicians for the album. I was aware of who Tim was but I wasn’t very familiar with his work; I knew “Levels” and I knew that he was this really...

The unexpected death of Edm superstar Avicii on the first day of the second weekend of the 2018 Coachella festival brought a somber tone to the desert fest, especially near the Sahara Tent — the Edm stage where (in a different location on the field) the DJ closed out the night in 2012.
Avicii received a loving tribute from the stage thanks to Norwegian DJ Kygo. Towards the end of his set, an image of Avicii appeared in triplicate on the giant video screens while the 2017 song “Without You” played. The screens then flashed to Avicii’s name and the words: “Rest in peace. We will miss you.”
On Saturday night, Nile Rodgers, who had collaborated with Avicii, said from the stage: “Just yesterday, one of my best friends in the world, Avicii, passed away.” Rodgers, who survived cancer after being diagnosed eight years ago, remarked that he was lucky to be alive,...

News of Avicii’s death on April 20 has hit the music industry hard — not just because he was one of the most successful dance music producers of the last decade, but also because Tim Bergling, the man behind the Edm moniker, was beloved as a human being.
Among those closest to Avicii were the executives who signed, developed, managed and promoted the Swedish innovator. They include: Per Sundin, Universal Music Group Svp, Nordic Region; David Massey, current CEO of Island Records, who’s due to leave his post in June (Avicii was signed through Universal Music Sweden); At Night Management’s Ash Pournouri, who steered the star through his breakout years; longtime publicist Diana Baron of Diana Baron Media; and business partner Christer Thordson.
One of the people to spend hours in the studio with Avicii was Geffen Records president Neil Jacobson. A veteran A&R executive, Jacobson started working with Avicii on “Levels,...
