NFL player who directed the Cleveland Browns' renowned defense in the 1980s and was Michigan's senior defensive football analyst. He worked on the football staffs at Ohio State University and Michigan State University from 2005-16. Defensive coordinator in four AFC championship games with three different teams, but spent almost 10 years with the Browns, beginning in 1979, and became defensive coordinator in 1984. He left for a year, but returned in 1986 as defensive coordinator when the team won back-to-back AFC championships in 1986-87. He spent the rest of his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders, retiring in 1998.
