Succession star Brian Cox is set to lead cast in and make his movie directorial debut on Glenrothan, a feature described as a “love letter” to his native Scotland.
The Emmy and Golden Globe winner will return to themes that have proved so potent in HBO hit Succession. Set against the backdrop of a thriving distillery town in the Scottish Highlands, Glenrothan, the film will tell the story of two estranged brothers reuniting in the land of their birth. The last time they spoke was on the day of their mother’s funeral when, following a violent exchange with their father, the younger of the two left their Highland home for America. Forty years later the brothers finally re-unite, back on Scottish soil and in the village that houses the family business – the Glenrothan Distillery.

Brian Cox, the Scottish actor known for playing formidable media baron Logan Roy on HBO’s “Succession,” is making his directorial debut in film with “Glenrothan.” The project is being co-developed by Lionsgate and London-based “Keeping Faith” producer Nevision.
The Emmy, Golden Globe and Olivier Award-winning “Succession” actor will also star in the film, which is billed as a “love letter to Scotland.” The project marks the second time Cox is going behind the camera: He previously directed an episode of HBO series “Oz” in 2000.

Heavens Above, a new Serbian film
Locarno has been in, let's say a strange transition period. I first started going when Carlo Chatrian was the Artistic Director (back in 2012). He left for the same position at Berlinale and his successer Lili Hinstin wasn't there long -- under two years which generated a lot of gossip. Giona A Nazzaro is the new director but because of Covid-19 this is his first edition. Maybe I was just lucky or my tastes align more with Nazzaro's than previous directors but this festival started with more energy and verve. (Until now my perception of Locarno was that it held a small number of amazing discoveries diluted in a pull of dull old fashioned auteurial selections.)
I choose today's two movies following my gut instinct and I especially liked how the films were having almost having a dialogue between themselves, despite major differences in tone and setting.

A few weeks before filming began on Bleeker Street’s poignant drama “Supernova” stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci did a switcheroo. They decided to flip their roles. Filmmaker Harry Macqueen (“Hinterland”) originally cast Tucci as Sam; a pianist who has been partners with novelist Tusker (Firth) for 20 years. They have decided to travel in a cramped Rv through England’s Lake District to visit with friends and family before Tusker’s early onset dementia advances.
During a recent Zoom conversation with Firth, Tucci and Macqueen moderated by Variety’s Marc Malkin, Tucci explained that “as we started to sort of get towards rehearsal Colin said, ‘I think we should switch roles.’ I said, ‘I actually have been thinking the same thing.’ We told Harry, who I know was horrified at that.” But Maqueen was more amenable to the change telling his actors to read several scenes as cast and then flipping it.

The new Colin Firth-Stanley Tucci drama “Supernova” deserves some credit for not milking easy tears. Unfortunately, it doesn’t milk difficult ones, either. It’s a movie that lays out a scenario rife with dramatic and poignant potential before deciding the potential was apparently enough.
There’s no question that it’s a cozily well-crafted production, from the protagonists’ sweaters to legendary cinematographer Dick Pope’s stunning images of the British countryside, but by the time the film reaches its final fade-out, there’s a sense that writer-director Harry Macqueen (“Hinterland”) left too much unspoken and unexplored.
Firth and Tucci play a longtime couple who leave London in their Rv for a long trip. Their destination is a concert, the first that celebrated pianist Sam (Firth) has performed in years. He’s put his career on hold to become caretaker to novelist Tusker (Tucci), who has spent the...
