John Clearwater
A senior Army Public Affairs officer assigned to Los Angeles, Lt.
Colonel Clearwater is the Deputy Director for the American Forces
Network Broadcast Center, AFN. He served previously as the U.S. Army
Liaison to the Entertainment Industry, OCPA-LA. As entertainment
liaison, he provided guidance and support to more than 140
entertainment programs and events. Including technical support to 16
feature films, and such big budget movies as, The Avengers, Battleship,
Star Trek, and Lone Survivor. He provided Army guidance and support on
more than 80 cable and network television programs, ranging from Hawaii
5-O, Army Wives, and Ellen, as well as a spectrum of documentaries on
subjects from Army operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, military weapons
and equipment, leadership and tactics. He was the DoD Project Officer
for the first-ever reality television series, Married to the Army,
filmed in Alaska for the Oprah Winfrey Network.
He has served as the Director of Communications for U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) and spokesperson for the Army's 27,000 special operations personnel serving in two wars. Clearwater came to USASOC from Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) where he served as PAO for then-Lt. General Stanley McChrystal. Much of his two years at JSOC was spent in Iraq supporting Task Force operations.
Clearwater has served as spokesperson for the Army's premier combat training center, NTC, at Fort Irwin, Calif. Along with three years as PAO for the famed 1st Infantry Division, The Big Red One, in Wurzburg, Germany. He was part of the initial entry force into Kosovo in 1999. Clearwater commanded a Public Affairs Detachment which he deployed to the Persian Gulf for a year. Clearwater served as an instructor at the DoD Public Affairs Officer Course, DINFOS, before attending the yearlong resident Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
LTC Clearwater is a Special Forces officer who served four years with 5th Special Forces Group. He commanded two ODAs, with specialization in High-Altitude Mountain Warfare and Long-Range Desert Mobility (SCUD Hunting).
Originally from Montana, Clearwater received an ROTC commission at Montana State University and served in an Armored Cavalry troop. He later served four years as a Psychological Operations officer. He is a graduate of the Army's Special Forces officer course, Psyop Officer course, Civil Affairs officer course, Armor Officer Basic and Advanced courses, Airborne school, Ranger school, Public Affairs officer course, SERE Level-C, and Arabic Language course.
