When Kamala Harris was running for California attorney general in 2010, a young professionals group threw a campaign fundraiser at a now-defunct nightclub in Los Angeles called h.wood. Hundreds attended for a door fee of $45. “The nightclub was so packed out, she had to stand on top of a table in order to be heard,” says then event co-chair Todd Hawkins of Hawkins Mikita, a social impact group that connects Hollywood with political and philanthropic causes.
Hawkins has been active in leading various incarnations of young political organizations since 2006 when Gen44, a fundraising group that charged a $44 entry fee for such casual outings as nightclub events and basketball games was founded to support Barack Obama as the 44th president. Taking a page from bigwig Hollywood bundlers like Jeffrey Katzenberg and Haim Saban, Hawkins adopted the model of must-attend events with stars who connect with the younger demographic of Gen44. More than a decade ago, Jinkx Monsoon manifested her dream life. During her winning run on Season Seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race, she confessed that her biggest goal after the show was to “do drag on Broadway.”
She’s more than made good on her word since. After finishing a celebrated run as Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago last year, she took on the role of Audrey, the sweet but beleaguered bleach-blonde in the off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, and is set to return to Chicago at the end of the month.

Ever since snatching the season 16 crown on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” life for Nymphia Wind has been nothing short of a whirlwind experience.
She has performed for the President of Taiwan, opened for Steve Aoki at the Gold Gala after party, joined her fellow queens at the Critics Choice Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema and Television and, earlier this month, performed at Vice President Kamala Harris’ Pride Celebration in Washington D.C. She has yet to sit down and have an “Oh God, I won” moment — and she has no intention of stopping for one.
“It’s been wild and crazy,” she says speaking to Variety over a Zoom call from Taiwan.
Here, Wind reflects on her historic win; she is the first-ever Taiwanese queen and the third Api winner, following in the footsteps of Season 3’s winner Raja and Season 15 queen Sasha Colby. She also talks about meeting Jane Goodall on Earth Day,...

RuPaul’s Drag Race is more than just your typical reality TV competition series; it has evolved into a cultural phenomenon. The show has crowned numerous superstar drag queens who have stomped through the Werk Room, with over 100 queens competing for the highest honor in the world of drag.
Hosted by RuPaul Charles, it celebrates the artistic prowess of drag queens from diverse backgrounds and offers a glimpse into the lives of contestants who courageously share their tales of resilience in the face of discrimination and prejudice.
Since its debut in 2009, the show has consistently delivered iconic television moments, with episodes challenging contestants to showcase their ‘charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent.’ Even if one doesn’t snatch the crown as the season’s winner, there’s still the opportunity to secure a coveted place in the ‘Drag Race Hall of Fame’ through RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

[This story includes spoilers from the opening two episodes of the new season of Doctor Who, “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord.”]
Doctor Who, BBC’s long-running science-fiction show, is back with a new season, a new cast and, for many international territories, a new home on Disney+.
The first two episodes of the latest season have now dropped on the streamer, and on the BBC iPlayer in the U.K., and they see Ncuti Gatwa (Barbie, Sex Education) firmly solidifying his role as the Fifteenth Doctor with companion Ruby Sunday, played by newcomer Millie Gibson, after their 2023 Christmas Day debut with “The Church On Ruby Road.”
Gatwa recently wowed crowds with his punky red carpet style at the L.A. Doctor Who premiere, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “There’s a twist to this traditional, institutional show that’s stepping into the modern era.”
Earlier this week, THR ran the first part of this interview with the Doctor Who pair — which didn’t include any spoilers.

BBC’s science-fiction powerhouse Doctor Who has launched its new season starring Ncuti Gatwa (Barbie, Sex Education) across the world on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere.
Showrunner Russell T Davies first performed the unenviable task of bringing the series back to the small screen in 2005, with actor Christopher Eccleston (HBO’s The Leftovers) in the lead role and launching it to new heights with almost 14 million viewers tuning in from the U.K alone.
Davies then left his showrunning duties in 2009, handing the franchise over to Sherlock’s Steven Moffat. But he returned for four specials celebrating Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary in 2023. And with it, he brought Gatwa to the role of the Time Lord.

Warning: spoilers for Doctor Who episode “The Devil’s Chord”.
Just before Doctor Who baddie the Toymaker was defeated, bound with salt, and imprisoned in a deep, deep vault at the end of 2023 episode “The Giggle”, he issued a threat. “My legions are coming,” he told the Doctor(s).
Well, now the Toymaker’s legions are here.
First, the Christmas special saw a galleon of baby-eating goblins fly in to cause coincidence-based-mischief in “The Church on Ruby Road“. Next, the Toymaker’s offspring Maestro put the willies up the Doctor by wreaking havoc in “The Devil’s Chord”. “That thing must be part of the Pantheon,” the Doctor said about Maestro. “Oh, God.”

The iconic British sci-fi show, Doctor Who returns once more with thrilling adventures featuring Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday. In its typical fashion, the show takes the audience on a ride, this time around it also hits a pitstop in 1960s London for a musical showdown against the terrifying Maestro, portrayed by the multi-talented Jinkx Monsoon.

The second episode of the new "Doctor Who" season (and the best episode of the two-part premiere) starts off with what is basically just one giant meta joke. The Doctor is pleasantly surprised when Ruby asks for him to take them to watch the Beatles as they record their first album. He tells her that most companions pick basic, predictable destinations like the Titanic or Mars, and then marvels, "Why haven't I ever done this before?"
The answer is surprisingly simple: The Titanic disaster is public domain, but the Beatles' music is not. "Doctor Who," a show that is famous for its shoestring budget and its wobbling sets, has likely never been able to afford the licensing fee required just to play one of the band's songs. Whereas most bands only charge in the $25,000 to $50,000 range for a TV show to use a song of theirs — which is already pushing...

Diversity and representation are vital in the entertainment industry. So when the Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa was cast as the fifteenth Doctor in Russell T Davies’ fourteenth series, Doctor Who, it should have been a cause for celebration. Sadly, instead of being met with open arms, he has faced a barrage of racist and homophobic backlash from online trolls.
In case you missed it, Gatwa’s casting in Doctor Who signifies the first queer actor portraying the Time Lord. Regretfully, certain bold casting choices will inevitably give rise to hatemongers, as was the case with the Masters of the Air actor.

However, Jinkx Monsoon, who appears as the villainous Maestro in the fourteenth series of Doctor Who, recently responded defiantly to the negativity, elevating the conversation to an introspective high.

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost half a year since Russell T. Davies’ triumphant return to the Doctor Who hotseat. Over the course of three blockbuster 60th anniversary episodes and a cracking Christmas special — the latter of which marked the introduction of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson’s new companion Ruby Sunday to the Whoniverse — Davies’ regeneration of the world’s longest-running sci-fi series got off to a flying start. And that regeneration continues apace as Rtd’s first full season back at Who’s helm gets underway, with Gibson and Gatwa’s electric chemistry driving a promising if less-than-perfect two-episode premiere.

We’ve had goblins on Doctor Who, now it’s time for gods.
Drumming up excitement for the new season in the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Russell T Davies is promising anarchy. In a preview of episode two “The Devil’s Chord,” Davies teases the wild, raw, tumbling, free-falling energy that comes from introducing “a godlike element into Doctor Who”.
That godlike element? It’s a god, as played by drag performer and Broadway star Jinkx Monsoon. In “The Devil’s Chord” – which comes out bundled with episode one on May 10/11 depending on your time zone – Monsoon plays Maestro aka the god of music. Her character is described in the pages of Dwm 603 as “a maleficent god”, “a deity with daddy issues”, and the episode’s titular devil.
(‘Maestro’ is of course also the Italian word for ‘master’, a connection that hasn’t escaped Doctor Who fans...

Ncuti Gatwa’s first series of Doctor Who is almost here – and to remind us of this, the BBC have released a full trailer.
If there’s one thing to take away from the trailer for the new series, it is this – Russell T Davies is putting every penny of the higher budget up on the screen.
With the premiere of Ncuti Gatwa’s debut series just weeks away, the marketing campaign is beginning to ramp up. First, we got the welcome news that former showrunner and Doctor Who’s most prolific writer Steven Moffat has penned an episode for the new series, which is described as “Hitchcockian” in tone. His episode was directed by Julie-Anne Robinson.
Now, we have a full trailer running to two minutes and change. It’s the most footage of the new series we’ve had so far, from the Tardis crashing through a wall,...

According to a report, new Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson is leaving after her first series, and her replacement has been cast.
We’ve only had one hour of Ncuti Gatwa’s era of Doctor Who. However, in production terms, the second series is currently filming, and willl be broadcast in 2025.
While there are many advantages to filming so far ahead, one of the disadvantages is that information is harder to keep contained.
Which leads us to some news that was first reported by The Mirror – so do take it with a pinch of salt – but the story’s been picked up by a lot of websites, and it looks as though there’s something in this.
Apparently, Millie Gibson will leave Doctor Who after the 2024 Christmas Special. The new companion is said to be Varada Sethu, who is best known for starring in Neil Cross’ apocalyptic drama Hard Sun.

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers.
The Fifteenth Doctor era of Doctor Who is well underway with Ncuti Gatwa‘s first full episode helming the Tardis. This year’s Christmas Special, “The Church on Ruby Road,” saw the Doctor not only face off with mischievous Goblins with a taste for baby scones but also meet his new companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), who brings plenty of her own mysteries to the show. Who are her birth parents, what does her neighbor Mrs. Flood have to do with the upcoming season’s overarching plot, and what’s going on with the Hooded Woman who dropped her off at the church 24 years ago?
All questions we’ll have to wait to have answered in series 14, which is officially being marketed as Doctor Who season 1, marking the start of a new production era for the show, with returning showrunner Russell T Davies back at the helm.

The new trailer for the Doctor Who anniversary specials has dropped, and with it the reveal that Neil Patrick Harris is going to be playing the specials’ Big Bad – The Toymaker. Many fans had already guessed this was coming, because Doctor Who fans have a sixth sense for determining precisely which camp villain in an elaborate outfit has trapped the Doctor in an elaborate mind game of his own devising.

It sounded great, didn’t it? Three hour-long Doctor Who anniversary specials in November, a Christmas (not just “festive”) episode, and a new season starting much earlier than many had assumed it would. That was the announcement made on Tuesday August 22 by this post on the Culture section of the BBC’s website, as reported (and screen-grabbed) by multiple online outlets.
The original BBC statement read as follows:
“Three hour-long special episodes of Doctor Who will be available from November 2023, with a Christmas special dropping in December and a new season in Spring 2024.”
Go to the same page today, Thursday August 24, and the same statement currently reads:
“Three hour-long special episodes of Doctor Who will be available from November 2023, with a Christmas special dropping in December.”
After the Spring 2024 release date was seized on and widely reported online, someone’s been in with the digital scissors and snipped it out...
